Notes on the Orthography of the Shapira Manuscripts
The Shapira manuscripts, putatively precursors of Deuteronomy, have many indications of forgery, particularly in the orthography, which mixes the writing conventions of the Mesha stele and the Hebrew Bible. Notably, the consistent use of waw , instead of he , to mark final ō is an anachronism. These problems were not perceivable by the text’s nineteenth century critics (or its forgers), but in hindsight are clear marks of the forger’s art
How Old is the Hebrew Bible? A Response to Konrad Schmid
The methodological issues about how to integrate the linguistic history of Hebrew into our inquiries into the literary history of the Bible are complicated and controverted. In this contribution to the discussion, I attempt to clarify areas of agreement and disagreement, provide an example (Genesis 1–11) where some of the issues of integration of methods can be tested, and consider the relevant evidence for the emulation of classical Hebrew
Creating the Jews
This chapter presents a critique and alternative to Freud’s history of Moses, which relies on a monograph by the biblical scholar Ernst Sellin. A close examination of Sellin’s argument exposes its flaws, but also poses the possibility of a different response to Freud’s questions. Rather than seek to uncover a secret (or latent) history of Moses in the prophetic books, their plain (or manifest) sense provides ample evidence for the fashioning of m…

The Exodus as Cultural Memory
The Idea of a Critical Edition of the Hebrew Bible
The modern scholarly conversation about critical editions of the Hebrew Bible is 500 years old. In light of the new HBCE edition, it is worth exploring the major turns in this conversation and their conceptual entailments. The HBCE project is, in some respects, an affirmation of Wellhausen's position, against Nöldeke's, on the validity of eclectic method in textual criticism. It also resumes Geiger's emphasis on the exegetical importance of scrib…
The Contribution of Frank Moore Cross to Textual Criticism
Frank Cross's work on the biblical texts from Qumran Cave 4 yielded a new synthesis of the history of the biblical text and a new framework for the theory and practice of textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible. This paper describes and assesses these contributions, focusing on 4QSama, including criticisms and prospects for future scholarship
The Oxford Hebrew Bible
The Oxford Hebrew Bible (OHB) will produce critical (eclectic) texts for the biblical books and their ancient editions, accompanied by extensive text-critical commentary and an introduction addressing issues of textual history, translation techniques, and special problems for that book and its textual witnesses. The OHB editions will seek to represent the text in all of its historical dimensions, from the corrected archetype to later editions to …
A Hasmonean Edition of MT Genesis?
Many biblical scholars have endorsed the view that the MT chronology provides evidence for a Hasmonean edition of the Hebrew Bible. A review of the scholarship and the biblical texts shows that there is no warrant for such a view. The chronological details that provide the support for this view - which come down to three ancestors in the MT chronology of Genesis 5 - are explicable as the result of scribal revisions motivated by a local exegetical…
Mary Douglas and Anthropological Modernism
Mary Douglas’s scholarship has been described as “a classic expression of British anthropological modernism.” In this essay I explore the significance of her work within the larger intellectual horizons of modernism and within the Durkheimian tradition in anthropology. I then situate her work on the Hebrew Bible within this larger perspective, using her analysis of the abominable pig as an exemplary instance

Sibilants and šibbōlet (Judges 12
The phonetic problem of the šibbōlet incident in Judges 12 has long defied easy solution. After a consideration of the historical sibilant in question, this article proposes that the evidence from the Ammonite seal of Baʿlîšaʿ, an Ammonite king of the sixth century B. C. E., provides access to a solution. The biblical writing of this Ammonite name with a samek instead of a šin provides a phonetic parallel to the writing of šibbōlet with a samek i…
