Assessing Psychotic Behavior by the IMPS
A Measure of Impulsiveness and its Relations to Extraversion
The study sought evidence for the construct validity of the Impulsive scale of the Interpersonal Style Inventory (ISI), and its relation to Eysenck's extraversion. In study 1 a sample of 93 high-school boys completed the EPI, ISI measures of Impulsive and Sociable, and the Buss-Plomin Impulsive scale. Correlations of ISI Impulsive with the other two scales emerged as .50 or higher while relations with EPI extraversion was .36. In Study 2, 45 deli…
Comparisons of Psychiatric Outpatients with Controls on Bipolar Profile of Mood States
68 psychiatric outpatients were compared with 70 alcohol-impaired drivers and the norm sample ( N = 432 college students) on Bipolar Profile of Mood States which measures six mood states. The psychiatric outpatients described themselves as more anxious, hostile, depressed, unsure, fatigued, and confused than members of the comparison groups. A table of T scores was constructed for use in assessing patients on the bipolar profile
Factors Common to Motives and Personality Traits
The study was done to establish the dimensions common to two inventories devoted to assessing interpersonal patterns and motivational styles. The inventories were administered to a sample of 96 college students. The 27 scores were intercorrelated and subjected to a principal components analysis, and the five factors isolated were subjected to an oblique transformation. These higher-order factors were interpreted as Interpersonal Involvement, Self…

A Cluster Analytic Approach To MMPI Profile Types
Aims were to identify the profile types present in MMPI scale scores using Ward's hierarchical procedure and a nonhierarchical average linkage method. One data set consisted of the 35 code types developed by Gilberstadt-Duker and Marks-Seeman-Haller. Another data set consisted of Lanyon's group profiles of 210 diagnostic classes. These profiles were subdivided into odd-even samples of 105. Analysis of the 35 code types disclosed four clusters by …
Personality Types in Data from California Psychological Inventory as Defined by Cluster Analysis
The study compared the three personality types delineated by Burger and Cross by obverse factor analysis with those disclosed by an average linkage cluster analytic technique. The data were from three subsamples of 85 men who completed the California Psychological Inventory for Burger and Cross. The standard score profiles within each sample were intercorrelated and then cluster analyzed. Four profile types were replicated across the three subsam…
Four Dimensions Of Assertiveness
Two studies were conducted to test for the existence of several postulated kinds of assertiveness and to develop a set of scales capable of measuring these hypothesized constructs reliably. The preliminary form of 80 statements was administered to a sample of 175 subjects. A factor analysis confirmed the presence of four dimensions. The item sets were revised, extended and administered to a sample of 304 subjects consisting of 138 men and 166 wom…
Mood States and Acquiescence
The study sought to evaluate the influence of extreme response style on mood state factors isolated. The factors obtained after partialling out response bias from intercorrelations of adjectives were compared with those obtained from the original set. A sample of the 349 high school students were administered a 63-adjective feeling-and-mood inventory. A principal axis analysis of the adjective intercorrelations disclosed seven mood states, all mo…
Assessment of Motives and Orientations
Study aims to test for the hypothesized dimensional structure of a revision and extension of the Orientation and Motivation Inventory (OMI) and to check for sex differences. The 12-scale inventory was administered to 307 high school and college men, and to 184 college women. The intercorrelations among the half scale scores for the men and for the women were separately factor analyzed and rotated. For men, 10 of the factors, and for women, 11 of …
Higher-Order Personality Factors Of The ISI
To determine the higher order factors defined by scales of the Interpersonal Style Inventory (ISI), data from two male samples and from one female sample were separately analyzed. Intercorrelations of 14 of the scales were analyzed by the method of principal axes. The five rotated factors established were highly similar across samples. They were interpreted as Socialized vs. Unsocialized, Interpersonally Involved vs. Withdrawn, Autonomous vs. Con…
The Structure Of The California Q-Set
The study aim was to explore the dimensional structure of the California Q-Set, a widely use Q-sort procedure. The data analyzed consisted of the composited CQS descriptions of the male sample and the female sample during their high school years as reported by Block in his Lives Through Time. The 104 variables were intercorrelated across the 160 cases and analyzed by the method of principal components with a scree test criterion. The eight interp…
Analysis and Abbreviation of Bem's Sex-Role Inventory
Aims were to determine the dimensionality of the masculinity and femininity scales of the Bern Sex-role Inventory and to select a smaller subset of items to represent the two scales. Samples of 423 girls and 255 boys in Grades 9 to 13 from middle-class homes were administered the Bern inventory and the Interpersonal Style Inventory. The intercorrelations of the 40 sex-role inventory items were factored separately by sex. The first two factors cle…
An Orientation and Motivation Inventory
The report describes the construction and development of an inventory designed to measure 10 dimensions of general orientation, preference, and motivation toward activities, tasks, and people. The Orientation and Motivation Inventory was administered to 281 high school juniors and seniors and to 121 college freshmen and sophomores along with an occupational inventory. Each of the scales was subdivided for analysis into four subtests. Then the int…
Moral Judgment and Liberal-Conservative Attitude
The study's aim was to evaluate the hypothesis that the Survey of Ethical Attitudes by Hogan was actually a measure of liberal-conservative attitude. A sample of 81 men and women was administered the survey and measures of social attitude, dogmatism, and open-mindedness. A principal component analysis of scale intercorrelations confirmed the hypothesis and revealed the three dimensions postulated
Comparison Of Item-Level And Score-Level Typological Analysis
A method of typological analysis was applied to computer-generated l 96-item "questionnaire" data for 100 cases, under a variety of conditions as to: a. response pattern differentiation in the data; b. similarity index used; c. criteria for the formation of clusters-types. 'Under each combination of conditions, analyses were carried out at both item-level and score-level (i.e., records reduced to 12 eight-item "scores"). The results showed a cons…
Age and Sex Differences in Personality during Adolescence
The study sought to determine what changes occur in adolescent personality in the age period between 12 and 19 yr. Specifically the aims were to identify the personality dimensions that distinguish boys from girls at various age periods and any age trends in personality change. The Interpersonal Style Inventory was administered to 331 boys and 358 girls from six high schools. Boys and girls were significantly differentiated on this inventory at e…
Modes of Interpersonal Response to Peers
The study sought to (a) identify the main response patterns elicited by six types of interpersonal stimuli, and (a) test the effect of varying the sex of the agent and the age of the respondent. A Schedule of Interpersonal Response (SIR) designed to reflect the six classes of stimuli and two to four possible response modes was constructed. A factor analysis of 70 homogeneous subtests yielded five interpretable factors. Samples of working adults, …

Characteristic Response Modes to Interpersonal Situations
The study sought to identify (a) the main interpersonal situation-dimen- sions that evoke interpersonal responses, and (b) the main manifest reaction modes. An inventory consisting of 4 blocks of stimuli and 4 blocks of responses was developed. Responses were obtained to each set of stimuli from 258 women and 253 men. The correlations among stimuli and among responses to the stimuli were factored separately by block for each sex. Three factors we…

The Equivalence Of Psychotic Syndromes Across Two Media
The study goal was to test the equivalence of ten dimensions of psychotic behavior across two measuring media. The data consisted of ratings of 814 newly admitted schizophrenics made in the interview and on the ward. The factored. A least squares solution of a hypothesis matrix yielded ten clear factors of which eight were defined both by ward and interview measures
Dimensions of Interaction in Group Therapy
The Study sought to examine, by mean5 of factor analysis, a set of hypotheses concerning dimensions of interpersonal behavior in self-analytic groups. Members of 46 therapy groups consisting of 194 neurotic and psychotic patients in 23 mental hygiene clinics were observed over a four-session period. A non-participant observer rated each patient as to the frequency of occurrence of 76 specific behaviors. The intercorrelations among the variables w…
