Perceptions of inter-turn silence after requests in standard and colloquial Singapore English
This study explores how ‘formality’ distinctions affect interactional norms. We investigated whether features associated with Standard and Colloquial Singapore English influence listeners’ perceptions of delay in response to requests. This study examines military adolescents’ experiences of managing private information within their families during a parental deployment. Thirty-eight adolescents were interviewed about how they and their families managed private information across the deployment cycle. Judgments Concerning the Valence of Inter-Turn Silence Across Speakers of American English, Italian, and Japanese
The fact that people with minimal linguistic skill can manage in unfamiliar or reduced linguistic environments suggests that there are universal mechanisms of meaning construction that operate at a level well beyond the particular structure or semantics of any one language. Mothers Trait Verbal Aggressiveness as a Predictor of Maternal and Child Behavior During Playtime Interactions
This article explores associations between mothers’ trait verbal aggressiveness (VA) and maternal and child behavior during playtime interactions. Forty mothers completed a 10-minute play period with one of their children (range = 3–8 years) and then responded to D. A. Infante and C. J. Wigley’s (1986) trait VA scale. Perception of utterance relatedness during the first-word-period
Interactions between six toddlers (aged 1;0 to 1;6) and adults were examined to ascertain adult perceptions of toddler utterance relatedness and to determine temporal and interactional features that underlie those perceptions. Five raters made judgments regarding relatedness of the child utterances to the previous adult utterances; 251 utterances were examined. Speaking to and for Animals in a Veterinary Clinic
Based on observations of 185 veterinary clinic visits, 10 of which were videotaped, in this study, I extend the empirical investigation of animal-directed talk as a resource for organizing and managing social interaction. In the veterinary setting, personnel balance a variety of tasks: sustaining an expert demeanor, caring for animals, and maintaining good client relations. The Interactional Construction of Asymmetry
This study is based on transcriptions of twenty-one audiotaped encounters between patients with breast cancer and their oncologists. Using a conversation analytic approach, findings reveal how oncologists invoke a clinical agenda to postopone response to certain patient questions or to mark them retroactively as ‘out of order.’ These deferral actions take the shape of “pre-insert expansions” in which the physician mentions an activity to be perfo…

Interobserver Agreement on First-Stage Conversation Analytic Transcription
This investigation assesses interobserver agreement on conversation analytic (CA) transcription. Four professional CA transcribers spent a maximum of 3 hours transcribing 2.5 minutes of a previously unknown, naturally occurring, mundane telephone call. Researchers unitized transcripts into words, sounds, silences, inbreaths, outbreaths, and laugh tokens, and then coded each of 1,827 units on as many as 15 transcription dimensions. Agreement was a…
