Researching Philippine Englishes
This article achieves two ends. First, it surveys recent research on the English language in the Philippines, and, second, introduces the research articles from the contributors to the special issue on Philippine Englishes. The special issue is divided into five sections, namely, linguistic description, sociolinguistics, educational linguistics, critical linguistics and bilingual creativity. Linguistic and literary creativity in Philippine Englishes
Creativity in Englishes in the Philippines is evident in both literary and non‐literary works produced in current contexts of multilingualism. The term ‘creativity’ is traditionally associated with language use in literary texts, suggesting that a systematic study of creativity in language use lies only in the esoteric fields of literary studies and creative writing. In this article, I survey studies about English in the Philippines, many of which have been heavily influenced by the world Englishes paradigm. It was Braj Kachru himself who brought world Englishes to the Philippines in 1996, at a conference in Manila. In the Philippines, the English-only policy dominates the legal domain, despite the fact that there are at least 175 different languages in the country. As English remains the language of the educated elite, many Filipinos who do not belong to this circle are unnecessarily marginalized by this English-only policy.
