  • Voltaire, Derrida et les ruses de la raison

    Open Access•Bruno Penteado•ARTICLE•Nottingham French Studies•2023

Voltaire’s writings advance an emblematic understanding of reason in the French Enlightenment, envisaged as a divine gift that makes it possible for humans to put anything into question – except reason itself. Through a reading of various philosophical and literary texts by Voltaire, this article problematizes the sovereignty of Voltairean reason – the totalitarian reason that is at once immune to the very critique it founds and, as such, injurio…

  • Critical (Dis)pleasure

Bruno Penteado, Bruno Elias Penteado•ARTICLE•Qui Parle•2020

Recent developments in literary studies that can be grouped under the umbrella term postcritique purport to restore, in our disciplinary practices, attention to affect, pleasure, and attachment, which postcritics believe the critical tradition has silenced and neglected. Postcritics depict critique as a violent hermeneutic practice of excavating a text’s hidden truths. This essay claims that postcritique’s understanding of critical theory is misg…

  • Against Surface Reading

Bruno Penteado, Bruno Elias Penteado•ARTICLE•Mosaic•2019•Citada por: 1

Best and Marcus's surface reading urges scholars to embrace descriptive reading practices. I argue that they misread both de Man when claiming that texts need no readerly intervention and Jameson in their account of symptomatic reading. I also take issue with their claim that we are post-ideological

  • Eça de Queirós and the Victorian Press

Bruno Penteado, Bruno Elias Penteado•ARTICLE•Comparative Literature Studies•2016

In this judicious study of the journalistic production of celebrated Portuguese writer Eça de Queirós, Teresa Pinto Coelho departs from the canonical views of the writer's French influence, convincingly arguing that his work as the editor of review- and magazine-style periodicals profoundly owes to the late nineteenth-century Victorian press. Focusing on the short-lived Revista de Portugal and Suplemento Literário da Gazeta de Notícias, as well a…

  • The ghost in the mirror

Bruno Penteado, Bruno Elias Penteado•ARTICLE•European Journal of American…•2013

Here I present a reading of Paul Auster’s Ghosts, part of The New York Trilogy, attentive to theories of subjectivity (especially those informed by psychoanalysis). I also try to go beyond the notion of theory as a supplier of ‘critical tools’; in fact, my reading suggests that Ghosts is in harmony with and complementary to certain theoretical discourses; it belongs, then, to a category we can loosely call ‘theoretical fiction’. Central to my arg…
