Breaking ground in cross-cultural research on the fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia)
The current study examines whether the fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia) can be assessed reliably and validly by means of a self-report instrument in different countries of the world. All items of the GELOPH (Ruch and Titze, GELOPH〈46〉, University of Düsseldorf, 1998; Ruch and Proyer, Swiss Journal of Psychology 67:19–27, 2008b) were translated to the local language of the collaborator (42 languages in total). Sex differences in attitudes toward the use of animals have been reported in previous research. This study examines sex differences in the levels of, and the interrelations among, three potential antecedents of attitudes toward animal use: caring value orientation, pet care experience and attachment to pets. Path analysis showed that pet care experience, through attachment to pets, accounted for a significant portion of variance in animal use att…

Children's Understanding of “But”
Analyses of spontaneous productions of “but” in the conversations of 3- to 7-yr.-old children showed almost error-free use of the word. This evidence that relational terms do not undergo a gradual error-ridden course of acquisition contradicts the hypothesis about semantic complexity and indicates that certain comprehension tasks may assess metalinguistic rather than linguistic knowledge
