  • ‘Pimps” Self-presentations in the Interview Setting

Amber Horning, Roisin Bermingham et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Trafficking•2024

Using a mixed-method approach, we explored how 85 sex market facilitators used neutralization and subcultural discourse to present themselves in the interview setting. We used non-metric, Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) to test discursive themes that resulted in a three-fold model with the themes ‘good,’’bad,’ and ‘badass me’ with externalizing and internalizing approaches. The ‘good me’ subtype focused on fundamentally being a ”nice guy” but blam…

  • School Fairness and Repeated Bullying Victimization Among High School Students

    Open Access•Suzanne Overstreet, Julie Sriken et al.•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2023

Recent research has shown a link between fairness in terms of school rules and discipline and negative student outcomes, including delinquency, violent behavior, and victimization. The current study examines how fairness at school impacts bullying victimization—operationalized as repeated physical, psychological, or verbal victimization—among high school sophomores. We tested this hypothesis using one wave of the Educational Longitudinal Study (2…

  • Longitudinal Measurement Invariance of CCAPS-34 Scores with a Large University Sample

Khalid Stetkevych, Martin F Sherman et al.•ARTICLE•Measurement and Evaluation in…•2023•Referencias: 2

Objective Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms (CCAPS-34) scores were studied for longitudinal bias-free construct evidence

  • Psychometric Analysis of Scores on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (Audit) with a University Sample

Julie Sriken, Martin F Sherman et al.•ARTICLE•Measurement and Evaluation in…•2023•Referencias: 3

This study explored the psychometric characteristics of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) on a sample of 414 university undergraduate students (M age = 19.07, SD = 0.95). Internal consistency (α = .83), external divergent validity, and internal structural validity were adequate; the 2-factor model provided the best fit to the data

  • Psychometric Analysis of Scores on the Social Justice Scale (SJS) with a Human Services University Sample

Katherine Hales, Julie Sriken et al.•ARTICLE•Measurement and Evaluation in…•2023•Referencias: 4

The Social Justice Scale (SJS) and various subscales were studied on a sample of 414 human services university undergraduates. Internal consistency (α = .93), discriminant validity, and response bias were adequate. The 4-factor model demonstrated an excellent fit. Implications were discussed for use of the SJS in practice and research

  • Measurement Invariance and Structure Validity of Scores on the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression - Revised (Cesd-R) Scale with a Large University Sample

Julie Sriken, Bradley T Erford et al.•ARTICLE•Measurement and Evaluation in…•2023•Referencias: 3

Psychometric characteristics of CESD-R scores were explored on a sample of 966 undergraduate students. Internal consistency (α = .92), external convergent and discriminant validity, and response bias were adequate to excellent. Strong measurement invariance was evident for gender and race comparisons, and the unidimensional model fit the data best

  • Testing the Factorial Validity and Measurement Invariance of College Student Scores on the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) Scale Across Gender and Race

Julie Sriken, Sarah T Johnsen et al.•ARTICLE•Measurement and Evaluation in…•2021•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 5

Responses to the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scale displayed high score reliability (α = .91) and adequate convergent and divergent validity for college undergraduates. The data provided an adequate to excellent fit to the unidimensional model. Measurement invariance was demonstrated for gender and race

  • Psychometric Analysis of CCAPS-34 Scores With a Large University Sample

Martin F Sherman, Julie Sriken et al.•ARTICLE•Measurement and Evaluation in…•2020•Referencias: 4

Analysis of CCAPS-34 scores on a large (n = 4,852) university counseling center student sample supported internal consistency (α = .803-.896), one-month test-retest reliability (rtt = .706–.829), convergent and divergent validity, and good model fit. Measurement invariance of scores for all categories of race and student status was supported

  • Psychometric Analysis, Internal Structure, and Measurement Invariance of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (Audit) Scores From a Large University Sample

Bradley T Erford, Julie Sriken et al.•ARTICLE•Measurement and Evaluation in…•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

This study explored internal consistency (α = .834), test-retest (rtt = .911), convergent validity, and internal structural validity of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) on a large university student sample. The 2-factor model fit the data best and measurement invariance was demonstrated for Latinx, but not undergraduate/graduate levels

  • Risky Business

Amber Horning, Christopher Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2020•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 64

In this mixed methods study of 56 entry-level pimps in Harlem, NY, weexplore how pimps’ choices to use violence or control differ by where they are selling sex, who their clientele are, and whether these violent and controlling behaviors yield higher returns. First, we qualitatively explore how pimps account for each of these choices, and how each group of choices are related to the other choices. Second, we use bivariate statistical techniques t…

  • Disability

    Open Access•Carlyn Mueller, Carlyn O Mueller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2019•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 19

The data on violence against disabled people are scarce. The data on prevalence that does exist is staggering, however: disabled people make up one third to one half of all people killed by law enforcement and experience twice the rate of violence that others do. To study the relationships among ableism, violence, and disability as an intersectional identity, we use a DisCrit theoretical framework to conduct a selective review of three reports: a…

  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Queer People's Perceptions of the Criminal Justice System

Kevin L Nadal, Amalia Quintanilla et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social…•2015•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 4

Previous literature has found historically marginalized groups report more negative perceptions of the criminal justice system and lower levels of procedural justice, which then influences their mental health and their willingness to report crimes. While previous research on procedural justice has focused mostly on racial and ethnic minority groups, it is hypothesized that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals would a…

  • Racial microaggressions and Asian Americans

  • The Adverse Impact of Racial Microaggressions on College Students’ Self-Esteem

Kevin L Nadal, Yinglee Wong et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of college student…•2014•Citada por: 88•Referencias: 14

Racial microaggressions are subtle (often unintentional or unconscious) forms of racial discrimination that negatively affect victims’ mental health. Utilizing an undergraduate student sample (N = 225), the current study examined the relationship between racial microaggressions and self-esteem. Results indicate that racial microaggressions negatively predict a lower self-esteem, and that microaggressions that occur in educational and workplace en…

  • Microaggressions Within Families

    Open Access•Kevin L Nadal, Julie Sriken et al.•ARTICLE•Family Relations•2013•Citada por: 31•Referencias: 16

This study illustrates the types of multiracial microaggressions, or subtle forms of discrimination toward multiracial people, that transpire in family settings. Utilizing a Consensual Qualitative Research ( CQR ) Method and a Qualitative Secondary Analysis ( QSA ), multiracial participants ( N = 9) were interviewed in three focus groups to describe the types of microaggressions they encounter in their families. Five domains emerged including (a)…
