Polysubstance Use Trajectories and Social-Ecological Predictors in a Multi-Ethnic Sample of Adolescents
Background Substance use—including the use and co-use of alcohol, cigarettes, and illicit drugs—often emerges in adolescence. However, the longitudinal structure of polysubstance use and its social-ecological predictors are less understood. We examined (a) higher-order trajectories of polysubstance use (encompassing alcohol, cigarette, and illicit drug use) and (b) their associations with individual- and family-level factors. Methods Participants …
Familial Experiences of Crisis Exposure and Cultural Stress With Depressive Symptoms Among Venezuelan Parent‐Adolescent Dyads in the United States
Studies suggest that Venezuelan migrant families in the United States face both pre‐migration crisis exposures and post‐migration cultural stressors, both of which may influence their depressive symptoms. However, few studies have examined how familial pre‐ and post‐migration stressors additively and interactively predict depressive symptoms among Venezuelan parents and adolescents. We examined whether (a) pre‐ and post‐migration stressors can be…
How do pre-migration crisis exposures and post-migration cultural stressors shape mental health symptoms among Venezuelan youth in the United States and Colombia
The status‐related stress scale (SRSS)
The aim of this study was to develop and validate a scale to measure stress associated with maintaining temporary nonimmigrant study or employment status (e.g., F‐1, J‐1, or H‐1B status) among Asian adults in the United States. Items were developed following a combination of both deductive and inductive reasoning and refined through a systematic item generation process involving target population members and expert panels. We recruited a sample o…
Bullying and anxiety/depressive symptoms in Latinx adolescents living with obesity
Bullying is a serious public health issue for adolescents in the United States. Previous studies have demonstrated associations between self-esteem, anxiety/depressive symptoms, and bullying victimization (BV); however, these relationships have not been extensively studied considering the overlap of social identities of Latinx adolescents living with obesity and overweight (LAWO), who are more likely to be victims of bullying. The current study a…
Navigating Cultural Stress and Mental Health
INTRODUCTION: Cultural stressors during migration can shape family dynamics and impact mental health outcomes. This study investigates the relationship between cultural stress, parent-adolescent communication, and psychological well-being among Former Soviet Union (FSU) immigrant families in Israel. METHODS: This longitudinal survey study collected data at three time points. The first wave of data collection occurred between June and August 2020,…
Optimism and language proficiency predict incidence of and remission from PTSD among climate migrants
We observed a rapid initial remission from positive PTSD screen for a substantial portion of the sample. Participants who are proficient in English language may be most likely to screen positive for PTSD over time and least likely to remit from a positive PTSD screen. Findings underscore the importance of optimism and higher English proficiency for both decreased incidence of and increased remission from PTSD. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 A…

Validating negative context of reception scale for Ukrainians in the US
Daily levels of perceived context of reception and self-esteem among U.S. Latine university students
Latine university students represent 21.7% of the U.S. undergraduate student body, yet limited research explores their experiences with cultural stressors, self-esteem, and identity. This study examines the relationship between daily self-esteem and negative context of reception, moderated by two identity processes: normative identity style to host society and country of origin. Using multilevel models, we found that perceived negative context of…
Cultural stressors, acculturation processes, and mental health among adolescents in Korean multicultural families
Among Korean multicultural adolescents, acculturative stressors inhibit engagement in Korean cultural practices and identification as Korean, whereas conflict with parents inhibits engagement in heritage cultural practices and identification with the foreign-born parent's cultural heritage. Decreased Korean and heritage cultural practices and cultural identifications predict increased depressive symptoms and lowered life satisfaction. These findi…
Longitudinal determinants of thriving in Puerto Rican climate crisis migrants on the U.S. mainland
Life transition events and depressive symptom trajectories during young adulthood
Because sequential patterns of multiple transition events (i.e., college graduation, full-time employment, marriage, and parenthood) are associated with turning points in depressive symptom trajectories during young adulthood, the present study used a sample of 446 White adolescents (52.3% females; 15.58 years old, on average) over 18 years (1992 to 2010) to (a) identify distinct longitudinal joint processes between these sequential patterns of l…
Psychological and physical intimate partner violence and sexual risk behavior among South African couples
This study aimed to examine intimate partner violence (IPV) as it relates to both partners’ perceptions of IPV and sexual behaviors, considering how their IPV might be interdependent within the relationship dynamics. The sample consisted of 713 female–male dyads in which women were pregnant and living with HIV in rural South Africa. Using an actor-partner interdependence model (APIM), we examined the interdependent influence of psychological and …
The effects of parent–adolescent acculturation gaps on adolescent lifestyle behaviors
Findings highlight the importance of parent-adolescent acculturation gaps and family communication on fruit and vegetable intake for Hispanic adolescents. Targeting parent-adolescent acculturation gaps for families with low levels of communication may be important to improve dietary behaviors in Hispanic adolescents, who are already disproportionately affected by obesity
Perceived discrimination and posttraumatic stress disorder among Venezuelan migrants in Colombia and the United States
Perceived discrimination is an important factor when considering mental health outcomes among Venezuelans in the United States and in Colombia. Further, our findings suggest the presence of gender differences in the relationship between discrimination and PTSD. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
Sexual orientation and adolescent health outcomes
Existing research indicates that sexual minorities are at a disproportionate risk for adverse health outcomes. These findings corroborate best practice recommendations encouraging researchers to assess multiple dimensions of sexual orientation
Conjoint trajectories of couples' marital and parental conflictual behaviors and later-life mental, physical, and relational health
Conflictual marital and parental relationships mutually reinforce each other generating family-level stress. The cumulative experiences of stressful family conflictual circumstances (a family-level construct of family conflictual circumstances (FCC), based on marital and parental conflictual behaviors) affect a couple's well-being. The present study, utilizing longitudinal data of 370 couples in enduring marriages and a person-centered approach, …
The contribution of syndemic conditions to cardiovascular disease risk
The syndemic conditions of low education, childhood maltreatment, depression, HIV, alcohol and cocaine use, and obesity have been established as independent risk factors for cardiovascular risk, but research examining the association between syndemic conditions and cardiovascular risk in high-risk populations is lacking. A total of N = 503 participants underwent an ultrasound of the carotid artery to assess for atherosclerotic plaque. Participant…
How Early Socioeconomic Adversity Combines With BMI-Linked Genetics to Launch Adverse Developmental Processes Leading to Economic Hardship
The present study used a sample of 9,100 youth from The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health to identify how early socioeconomic adversity and BMI-related genetics combine to influence youth BMI and academic achievement/failure across successive life stages (i.e., adolescence, emerging adulthood, young adulthood), resulting in adverse economic outcomes in young adulthood. The results indicate that early socioeconomic adversit…
Predictors of Mental Health Profile Membership Among Vulnerable Emerging Adults
Purpose: The aim of this study is to understand the role of social support and gender in predicting membership in mental health subgroups that were identified in a previous study of emerging adults who had experienced a child protective services (CPS) investigation during childhood. Method: Using a nationally representative sample of youths (mean age = 18.99; N=1,179) tracked for an extended period following their CPS investigation, the present s…
Prenatal and Postnatal Intimate Partner Violence and Associated Factors Among HIV-Infected Women in Rural South Africa
Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been highlighted as one of the challenges to the effectiveness of the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) programs in rural areas in South Africa. This study aimed at assessing the prevalence of prenatal and postnatal physical as well as psychological IPV, and corresponding time-invariant and time-varying predictors, among HIV-positive women attending PMTCT services in rural South Africa. …

When Social Media Become Hostile Media
This study examines whether the characteristics of those who share news articles on social media influence the hostile media effect. In an experiment, participants read a news article shared by 1 of 4 Twitter users, 2 (Republican vs. Democrat) × 2 (21 vs. 503,000 followers). Consistent with the hostile media effect, both Republicans and Democrats believed that a news article shared by a Twitter user from an opposing political party was more biase…
Marital strain trajectories over a quarter century and spouses' loneliness
Although research suggests that stressful marital experiences may lead to feelings of loneliness in later life, little is known about the influence of marital strain over an extended period of time on loneliness in later years. Thus, in the present study, drawing from family systems and cognitive theories along with common fate and actor-partner interdependence modeling approaches, we hypothesized a hybrid model comprised of two multilevel pathwa…
The Interaction of Affective Dispositions, Moral Judgments, and Intentionality in Assessing Narrative Characters
Several theories, including disposition-based theories, depend on moral judgments about narrative characters’ actions to describe how audiences understand characters in media narratives. However, more needs to be known about how moral judgments about characters’ actions are made and affective dispositions toward characters are formed and change as a story unfolds. There is evidence that the intentionality underlying a character’s actions is an im…
Is Working Later in Life Good or Bad for Health? An Investigation of Multiple Health Outcomes
Consistent with social causation and social selection traditions, the findings support bi-directional associations among changes in work status (the level of work), immediate memory, physical disability, and depressive symptoms in later years. Practical implications are discussed
Health continuity over mid-later years in enduring marriages
Health problems in midlife have been shown to continue into later adulthood. This continuity may be attributed to social selection and social causation, with longitudinal sequential associations between health problems and economic pressure (EP) over the life course creating mediational effects (health → EP → health). Moreover, in enduring marriages, this potential mediation may operate as a dyadic process over time. Yet this mediational process …
