  • The Multiplied Mind

    Milen Jissov•ARTICLE•Historical Reflections/Réflexions…•2023

This article examines a dramatic aporia in modern European intellectual history, involving what it calls “perspectival thinking”—a way of thinking in which an individual assumes and thinks from the perspectives of others. This paradox appears in the work on totalitarianism of Europe's three foremost thinkers on totalitarianism—Hannah Arendt, Arthur Koestler, and George Orwell. Examining their explorations of perspectival thinking, this article ar…

  • Wretched Subjectivity

    Open Access•Milen Jissov•ARTICLE•Poljarnyj vestnik•2021

It argues that, to comprehend totalitarianism, Arendt forged a heterodox method of historical analysis. Employing that method, she conceived totalitarianism as a form of transcendence of historical context. In doing so, however, she ignored crucial historical contexts that were in fact related…

Her biography of the Berlin salonnière Rahel Varnhagen, Rahel Varnhagen: The Life of a Jewess, was Hannah Arendt's most systematic analysis of Jewish identity. Written in the 1930s, it interpreted its protagonist's Jewish identity as a function of her understanding of history. But Arendt's construal of Jewish selfhood in this way could be seen as exhibiting critical conundrums, revealed through considering her work as a whole - as an oeuvre. This…

Left History features articles from a variety of theoretical approaches; these include feminist, marxist, and postmodernist deliberations on topics such as race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, culture, the state, labour, the environment, theory, and method
