Learner Language, Discourse and Interaction
Learner language research has long been central to second language acquisition (SLA) and applied linguistics, serving as a bridge between SLA, corpus linguistics, and pedagogy (Gilquin and Granger 2015; Tracy-Ventura and Paquot 2021). Yet the field has historically suffered from a “written language bias” (Linell 2004), privileging accuracy and lexical knowledge while marginalizing spoken interaction. This imbalance—partly attributable to the rela…
Translation and Interpreting as Social Interaction
Technology Competence Training of Translation Educators in the Age of Technology-and-Information Empowerment
Despite the consensus on the paramount importance of translation technology competence, its exact definition and constructs remain vague and inconsistent. Moreover, translation educators’ dual identity both as a translator and an educator received insufficient attention. Therefore, drawing on the previous models of translation competence, we identified and defined the constructs of translator educators’ technology competence, and proposed a three…
Can Syntactic Complexity Distinguish Translator Style?—A Novel Stylometric Analysis of Hongloumeng with Dependency Grammar
The present study is likely the first to investigate translation style through the lens of dependency distance. While translator style has been explored using various indicators—such as STTR, LR, MSL, and typical language patterns like reporting verbs and loan words—prior research has rarely accounted for syntactic structures, particularly syntactic complexity, which has been widely discussed in fields like second language acquisition. Dependency…
Critical Literacy Approach to English as a Foreign Language
As the dominant international language, English has been widely recognized as the global language. The critical literacy approach offers new perspectives concerning the social purpose of English learning. Against this background, Critical Literacy Approach to English as a Foreign Language by Nizar Kamal Ibrahim, a monograph published in 2022, discusses in depth how the theory of the critical literacy approach can be applied to English teaching. T…
Does Simplification Occur at Sentence Level in the English Translations of Chinese Academic Works? –A Comparable Corpus Analysis of Syntactic Complexity
Scholars of translation studies have hypothesized that translated texts tend to show simplification at lexical and syntactic levels compared to non-translated native texts. The present study examined simplification at the sentence level between translated and native English texts from the perspective of syntactic complexity. The research finds that the English translations of Chinese academic works tend to be simpler than their non-translated cou…
The Incidence and Characteristics of Perinatal Stroke in Beijing
Objective To assess the incidence, risk factors, and clinical characteristics of perinatal stroke in Beijing. Methods This multicenter prospective study included all the live births from 17 representative maternal delivery hospitals in Beijing from March 1, 2019 to February 29, 2020. Neonates with a stroke were assigned to the study group. Clinical data, including general information, clinical manifestations, and risk factors, were collected. Up …
Who translate Chinese academic works of the humanities and social sciences - a survey of the academic background of the government-funded translators
Bibliometric studies have mostly been concerned with journal articles, conducting surveys on the status quo of translation and interpreting studies in China. Very little research has been undertaken on a large scale to understand the practice-oriented projects funded by The National Social Science Fund of China. No study has been conducted on the academic background of the grantees of the projects, whom we call government-funded translators. Inte…
A Comparative and Contrastive Study on Translation Criterion Thoughts in China and the West
This manuscript is a Ph.D. thesis abstract. This thesis makes an in-depth analysis of the translation criterion thoughts in China and the West
From Social Reform to Knowledge Dissemination
The translation of non-literary texts, especially science texts, compared to that of literary texts, tends to receive less attention not only from general readers in public, but also from scholars. One phenomenon of such tendency is that non-literary texts are far less retranslated. Different from literary texts, which could have as many as dozens of retranslations, such as the English novel Jane Eyre, which has more than thirty Chinese retransla…
The effect of the presence of children on adult smoking behaviour
Our findings confirm the existence of the upward intergenerational effect of the presence of children on adults' smoking behaviour in China. However, such effects are not equal across all demographic characteristics. Future research could explore other parts of the upward mechanism and possible pathways for a stronger effect. In resource-poor areas, targeting cessation activities at those who have children at an early age may be an effective stra…
Spillover effects of children’s political status on elderly parents’ health in China
BACKGROUND: Due to the sustained increases in life expectancy over the past half century, the elderly today will receive supports from their children for a longer period than ever before. Therefore, understanding the spillover effects of children's socioeconomic status on parents' health becomes increasingly important for both scholars and policy makers. METHODS: The Ordinary Least Squares regression is applied to the China Health and Retirement …
Cadre Children and Cognitive Function of Parents in China
This paper investigates whether children’s political success contributes to social stratification and health inequality among older adults. Using China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data, we investigate whether having a cadre (i.e., politically employed) child substantially increases overall cognitive functioning among older adults. We find that the beneficial effect of having a cadre child on cognitive functioning is equivale…
