There is a remarkable and surprising connection to be found between an argument of Søren Kierkegaard's and one of Zhuangzi's—what I call the ‘social misfit’ critique. I will argue that this connection highlights a hitherto unacknowledged parallel between the moral thought of their respective targets: Hegel in the case of Kierkegaard and Confucius in the case of Zhuangzi. To support her divine motivation theory of the good, which seeks to ground ethics in motives and emphasize the attractiveness of morality over against the compulsion of morality, Linda Zagzebski has proposed an original account of obligations which grounds them in motives. The most significant contemporary controversy surrounding the thought of Mozi is the debate over his ultimate criterion of right action—whether he should be interpreted as a divine-will theorist or as a utilitarian. The following are some comments I have circulated recently concering some of my observations ( and frustrations!) with our undergraduate students and what happens when class sizes get bigger. I welcome feedback from others as to whether these characteristics are idiosyncratic to my institution or arefound more generally.
Hesiod's Descriptions of Tartarus ("Theogony" 721-819)
SUSPECTED INTERPOLATIONS ARE, whatever their other uses, a good indication of scholarly unease, and by this measure Hesiod's account of the underworld (Theogony 721-819) has left scholars more puzzled than most passages in what is, all told, a rather puzzling poem. This unease has continued to affect the great modern editors of the text: West (1966: 50) believed that the passage provided the best evidence for archaic interpolations in the Theogon…
