  • Studying Islamophobia in France and England

    Open Access•Kawtar Najib•ARTICLE•Islamophobia Studies Journal•2025

This article attempts to discuss the circulations, confrontations, and differentiated receptions of knowledge between academic and political spaces based on my experience and professional career in the two different contexts of French and Anglo-American universities. By detailing how my research on the geographies of inequality and Islamophobia developed, I offer here a critical reflection on my positionality as a French Muslim geographer from ra…

  • The United Kingdom's first anti-Muslim pogroms in a context of genocidal Islamophobia in Gaza

    Open Access•Kawtar Najib•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 15

In summer 2024, the United Kingdom was the scene of several days of horrific public attacks against Muslim populations. While some have described these attacks as spontaneous riots between far-right groups and anti-racist activists, these were in fact the United Kingdom's first anti-Muslim pogroms, occurring in a very specific genocidal context against the Muslim populations of Gaza. In this commentary, I explore why such pogroms happened by anal…

  • Everywhere Islamophobia

    Open Access•Kawtar Najib•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2025•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 82

The multi-scalar nature of Islamophobia highlights how it spares no spatial scale (from the globe to the body). However, Islamophobia is also a multi-dimensional nature that affects all places and sectors of our societies (whether political, institutional, educational, etc.). This article aims to reinforce this dual nature by using the notion of 'Everywhere Islamophobia', in light of theories showing that racism is everywhere. The everywhereness …

  • Critical Muslim geographies through a critical geography of Islamophobia

    Open Access•Kawtar Najib•ARTICLE•Dialogues in Human Geography•2024•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 6

In this commentary, I focus on James Sidaway's contribution to critical Muslim geographies and his suggestions for moving beyond decoloniality that do not hesitate to take a stand against the current direction of mainstream studies on Islam and Muslims. While I agree with many of his points, I detail three critical thoughts around (i) the idea of integrating terminologies specific to Islam and Muslims into the scholarship of Muslim geographies to…

  • Spatialized Islamophobia

    Kawtar Najib•BOOK•Spatialized Islamophobia•2021

This book demonstrates the spatialized and multi-scalar nature of Islamophobia. It provides ground-breaking insights in recognising the importance of space in the formation of anti-Muslim racism. Through the exploration of complementary data, both from existing quantitative databases and directly from victims of Islamophobia, applied in two important European capitals - Paris and London - this book brings new materials to research on Islamophobia…

  • Spaces of Islamophobia and spaces of inequality in Greater Paris

    Open Access•Kawtar Najib•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2020•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 24

This paper draws upon quantitative data collected from one of the principal associations fighting Islamophobia in France along with the population census, and provides a step forward in understanding the operation and distribution of Islamophobia. It presents a geography of Islamophobia in Paris based on statistical data, and aims to observe whether or not this geography corresponds or contrasts with geographies of inequality (such as those assoc…

  • Where does Islamophobia take place and who is involved? Reflections from Paris and London

    Kawtar Najib, Peter Hopkins•ARTICLE•Social & Cultural Geography•2020•Citada por: 30•Referencias: 15

This paper explores and compares the socio-spatial effects of Islamophobia in Paris and London. Our research focuses on different spaces and types of discrimination against Muslims or people who are perceived to be Muslim in Paris and London using primarily quantitative data. A quantitative analysis of the geographical spaces of Islamophobia is presented, while highlighting the ways in which anti-Muslim discrimination is gendered, racialized, cla…

  • Geographies of Islamophobia

    Kawtar Najib, Carmen Teeple Hopkins•ARTICLE•Social & Cultural Geography•2020•Citada por: 31•Referencias: 10

Islamophobia often refers to systemic racism against Muslims and the lived experiences of discrimination against people who are perceived as Muslim. These forms of racism and discrimination have intensified in the last couple of decades, especially since the War on Terror. This introduction argues that Islamophobia is a spatialized process that occurs at different scales in Muslim-minority countries: globe, nation, urban, neighbourhood, body and …

  • Socio‐spatial inequalities and dynamics of rich and poor enclaves in three French cities

    Open Access•Kawtar Najib•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2019•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 18

This paper analyses and compares the dynamics of sociospatial inequalities in districts of three cities located in the Northeast of France for the period 1990–1999–2006. The idea is to measure and track the dynamics of these inequalities that reveal significant urban fractures. Sociospatial disparities between districts and changes in them are measured using a multidate factorial statistical analysis. To do this, this paper collates 17 indicators…

  • Veiled Muslim women's strategies in response to Islamophobia in Paris

  • Interdependence Evaluation between the Home Neighborhood and the City

    Open Access•Kawtar Najib•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2018•Referencias: 4

This paper proposes a socio-cognitive approach to how people assess the different neighborhoods of a city. The main objective is to show that beyond the meanings associated with each neighborhood, the way in which residents relate to and evaluate their own neighborhood and the city center influence how residents perceive and assess the other remaining neighborhoods of the city. The assessment of one neighborhood cannot be analyzed separately from…
