Causal returns to education
Using 191 estimates from 145 studies across 54 countries, this paper synthesizes evidence on private returns to schooling. Quasi-experimental estimates imply an average causal return of about 10 % per year of education, with instrumental-variables (IV) estimates exceeding ordinary least squares (OLS) in roughly 80 % of cases. Social distancing requirements associated with COVID-19 have led to mass school and university closures worldwide. This paper updates Psacharopoulos and Patrinos and reviews the latest trends and patterns based on 1120 estimates in 139 countries from 1950 to 2014. We investigate the degree to which there is a trade‐off between child labour and human capital formation using time‐log data of children from a Tanzanian household survey.
