Again" and "Again
This work examines the grammatical properties of lại and nữa in Vietnamese, both of which can express the repetition of an event. It has been observed that different syntactic positions of lại result in different readings, as noted in previous studies. When lại precedes a verb, it may assume either the repetitive reading or restitutive reading. When lại follows a verb, it can only assume the restitutive reading. Nữa can be used for the repetitive…
Syntactic structures of Mandarin purposives
This paper investigates three constructions in Mandarin, all of which convey a purposive/teleological meaning, including thelaipurposive, thehaopurposive, and the bare purposive. Despite the fact that each type of purposive clause in Mandarin occurs at the right edge of a sentence, it is argued that none of the purposive clause is a genuine right adjunct in the underlying syntactic structure. On the other hand, our analysis shows that thelaipurpo…

Again' and 'again
This article analyzes two elements in Mandarin Chinese that denote repetition, you 'again' and zai 'again'. It has been assumed that you occurs in realis contexts, whereas zai occurs in irrealis contexts. We find that in fact each may occur in either context; furthermore, we argue that these two elements should be distinguished in terms of the structural positions they adjoin to and the event structures they occur in. We adopt Shen's (Journal of …
