Open Access•Mieke van den Akker, Magdalene Graf et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for Multicultural Education•2026

Purpose Demands for diversity recognition and equal opportunities are increasing in German higher education, accompanied by growing research interest in diversity climate and discrimination. Diversity climate refers to the collective perception of how diversity is acknowledged and integrated within organisations. • Perceived microaggressions and migrant health in Germany

Open Access•Adedeji Adekunle, Adekunle Adedeji et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2026

Perceived microaggressions were linked to poorer mental and physical health among migrants, partly through reduced psychological capital. Although psychological capital supported overall well-being, it did not consistently buffer the health impacts of microaggressions. In practice, this means that programs aimed at strengthening resilience, optimism, and self-efficacy should be combined with institutional measures to reduce discriminatory practic…

  • Perceived microaggressions and quality of life

Open Access•A Adedeji, Tosin Yinka Akintunde et al.•ARTICLE•Cogent Social Sciences•2025

In contemporary discourse, microaggressions are not mere fleeting occurrences but pervasive daily experiences that significantly influence individual and collective well-being. This current study delves into the role of personal resources and social support as mediators in the relationship between microaggressions and quality of life. The study analyses cross-sectional data from 604 African migrants in Germany, employing Structural Equation Model…

  • Challenges regarding integration and well-being of African Ukrainian war refugees in Germany

Open Access•A Adedeji, Stella Kaltenbach et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Human Dynamics•2025•Referencias: 5

The study explores the integration challenges of African refugees who fled the war in Ukraine and sought asylum in Germany amid the global refugee crisis. The research delves into language barriers, discriminatory encounters, administrative hurdles, and professional development complexities within the broader context of the war-induced displacement of individuals with a third-state status. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured, …

  • Socioeconomic status and social capital as predictors of happiness

Open Access•A Adedeji, Tosin Tunrayo Olonisakin et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2023

Understanding socioeconomic status (SES) and social capital as predictors of life outcomes has remained central to humanitarian, health and social research. This current study explores how socioeconomic status and social capital (community solidarity, locus of control and generalised trust) predict happiness among a sample of South African adults. Possible gender differences were also considered. Cross-sectional data from ( n = 1049) South Africa…

  • Interpreting Microaggression as a Determinant of Wellbeing

Open Access•A Adedeji, Tosin Tunrayo Olonisakin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Racial and Ethnic…•2023

Despite the increasing interest in exploring microaggression in the humanitarian context, there remains uncertainty on its mechanism for affecting life outcomes. There is a lack of studies on ethnic and racial minorities in non-western countries. The current research explores dimensions and manifestations of microaggression and how they affect wellbeing in a multicultural setting. The study uses a qualitative approach with 15 focus group discussi…

  • The multicultural conceptualisation of well-being

Open Access•A Adedeji, Tosin Tunrayo Olonisakin et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

The findings confirm personal circumstance and culture as significant for interpreting results from well-being research. Furthermore, it supports Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, highlighting the movement from deficiency needs to growth needs after deficiency needs are met. Research must adopt a more sociological approach to improve the accuracy and implementibility of findings when using standardised measures of well-being

  • Racial identity as a moderator of the association between socioeconomic status and quality of life

Open Access•A Adedeji, Johanna Buchcik et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2022•Referencias: 5

Research in social and humanitarian science has identified socioeconomic status (SES) as one of the essential determinants of quality of life (QoL). Similarly, racial identity is assumed to predict SES outcomes in multiracial settings. Therefore, understanding how racial identity moderates the association between SES and QoL may provide essential insights into the mechanisms generating socioeconomic inequalities and their implication on life outc…

  • Health-related quality of life among migrants and natives in Hamburg, Germany

Open Access•Johanna Buchcik, Jana Borutta et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration and Health•2021•Referencias: 4

Differences between migrants and German natives in HrQoL were partially confirmed. Future research should differentiate more strongly between migration contexts as well as other determinants of health (e.g. early life, social support, unemployment) and their policy implications according to the WHO
