Hate speech and speech-act theory
Hate speech is analyzed as a kind of insulting, that is an expressive speech act aiming at triggering a certain feeling in the addressee. In particular, it is shown that aggressive emotions like hate or contempt can also be signaled by other linguistic devices besides ethnic slurs, for instance, prosodical, morphological, and syntactic patterns. These devices are potential markers of hate speech that a hate speaker uses, and a target understands,…
Constructing a Socialist World
Craft books for children may give us insight into the children’s culture of a certain era. With their typical combinations of pictures and instructive texts, they may appear to be of a purely technical nature and thus ideologically uninteresting. However, I will argue that they are definitely anchored in reality and refer to it, thus shaping children’s world view. I will analyze two craft books from the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) in …
Being Silent About the Truth
Lying and deceiving are prominent topics in ethical narration. This has to do with an often absolutist stance against lying that shapes a large part of philosophical, religious, and political discourses. At the same time, lying and deceiving are topics in the field of moral education in which moral values such as honesty, sincerity, and truthfulness are propagated. Bringing these issues together, this article demonstrates how reflection about hon…
On Photos and Drawings in Baby Books. A Comparison Based on Dining Scenes
This article offers a comparative analysis of the aesthetic functions of photos vs. drawings in baby books. Baby books are understood as books for children between 0 and 3 years of age. Since the development of food intake and eating behavior is very important at this age, appropriate pictures of dining scenes can be found in many baby books. This article compares picturebooks for babies that show dining scenes, with two photo books, Trine kan...…
On commitment to untruthful implicatures
In the current debate on the lying-misleading distinction, many theorists distinguish between lying as insincere assertion and misleading through conveying an untruthful implicature. There is growing empirical evidence that average speakers count untruthful implicatures as cases of lying. What matters for them is the (degree) of commitment to an untruthful implicature. Since untruthful conversational implicatures may arise with non-assertions, an…
Lying, Deceptive Implicatures, and Commitment
Deceptive implicatures are a subtle communicative device for leading someone into a false belief. However, it is widely accepted that deceiving by means of deceptive implicature does not amount to lying. In this paper, we put this claim to the empirical test and present evidence that the traditional definition of lying might be too narrow to capture the folk concept of lying. Four hundred participants were presented with fourteen vignettes contai…
Our Daily Bread
This article focuses on three East German descriptive picturebooks from the 1950s that explain the production of bread, milk, and fish. These production stories not only convey knowledge by means of the juxtaposition of text and images but also emphasize the achievements of the five-year plan with respect to the provision of food for the citizens of the German Democratic Republic. This combination of information and propagandistic messages served…
What is an indirect speech act
The notion of an indirect speech act is at the very heart of cognitive pragmatics, yet, after nearly 50 years of orthodox (Searlean) speech act theory, it remains largely unclear how this notion can be explicated in a proper way. In recent years, two debates about indirect speech acts have stood out. First, a debate about the Searlean idea that indirect speech acts constitute a simultaneous realization of a secondary and a primary act. Second, a …
The folk concept of lying
Lying is a familiar and important concept for virtually all of us, and philosophers have written a lot about what it means to lie. Although it is commonly accepted that an adequate definition of lying captures people's use and understanding of this concept, there have been surprisingly few empirical studies on it. n recent years, however, there is a trend emerging to remedy this lacuna. In this paper, we provide an overview of these studies. Star…
The Oxford Handbook of Lying
This book provides a state-of-the-art account of past and current research on lying and deception. It provides definitions of lying and its subtypes from the perspective of linguistics, philosophy, and psychology, and outlines the range of fields in which lying and deception play a role. Popular questions such as “Is lie detection possible?” or “Is lying always morally wrong?” are dealt with in depth. The handbook describes the tools and approach…
Oxford Handbook of Lying
This handbook brings together past and current research on all aspects of lying and deception, with chapters contributed by leading international experts in the field. We are confronted daily with cases of lying, deception, bullshitting, and 'fake news', making it imperative to understand how lying works, how it can be defined, and whether it can be detected. A further important issue is whether lying should always be considered a bad thing or if…
Aspects of a theory of bullshit
This paper addresses the question whether bullshit is a reasonable pragmatic category. In the first part of the paper, drawing on the insights of Harry Frankfurt’s seminal essay, bullshit is defined as an act of insincere asserting where the speaker shows (a) a loose concern for the truth, and (b) does not want the addressee to become aware of condition (a). The author adds to this definition the condition (c) requiring that the bullshitter expre…

Konzepte des Lügens
Although lying is an action which is fundamental for human communication, there are not many analyses that treat lying from a linguistic point of view. This paper treats lying on the background of recent discussions of the semantics-pragmatics interface. On the one hand, lying has to do with truth and falsehood; since these are semantic notions, there is a semantic side of lying. On the other hand, lying has to do with the speech act of assertion…
Bald-faced lies as acts of verbal aggression
Several philosophy of language scholars have recently argued that the intention to deceive is not part of a well-defined concept of lying. So-called bald-faced lies, i.e., asserting what is false while speaker and hearer both understand that the speaker does not believe what s/he asserts are provided as evidence. In contrast to these proposals, it is pointed out in this article that lying is necessarily connected to an intention to deceive. Conse…

Expressive compounds in German
German adjectival and nominal compounds like ratten+scharf (‘rat sharp’) sau+schlecht, (‘sow bad’) Hammer+auftritt (‘hammer performance’), Arsch+gesicht (‘arse face’) contain meliorative or pejorative elements as part of their structure. The left-hand evaluative members of these compounds are usually considered as so-called semi-prefixes. Contrary to recent approaches within constructional morphology ( Booij 2009 , 2010 ), I will argue that these…

On lying
Although lying is a classical topic in philosophy, and certainly is very important in everyday life, there is a lack of genuine linguistic analyses of lying. In this article, lying is viewed as a speech act of insincere assertion. The liar misrepresents truth in order to deceive. While definitions like this are fairly common, consequences for the semantics/pragmatics interface, and, more importantly, for the ongoing debate about minimalism versus…
Tautology as presumptive meaning
Ever since the seminal work of Paul Grice, tautologies such as Business is business have been discussed from a number of angles. While most approaches assume that tautological utterances have to do with the operation of conversational maxims, an integrated analysis is still lacking. This paper makes an attempt at analysing tautologies within the framework of Levinson (2000), who proposes a distinction between three pragmatic levels, namely Indexi…
