“I hope that it comes across to the children that I am there as a human being”
Although teachers’ work is embodied, embodiment has not been widely discussed with reference to teachers’ work or teacher education. The digital era has changed teachers’ work in many ways, including their embodiment, as digital technologies are part of everyday life in schools. Hence, teachers’ embodiment in the digital era requires critical reflection. This study contributes to this reflection in three ways. First, we explore teachers’ embodime…
What’s love got to do with it? Thinking touch in education with theories of love
Love and touch are commonly considered irrelevant, soft or unprofessional topics in education. Touch has a difficult history in educational institutions across international contexts. There is a strong body of research looking into violent touch in education. In this paper, we explore touch in educational institutions through the theory of love. Taking a diffractive approach, we present three cases showing, first, how love might be lacking in mom…
In the best interest of the child
This article examines misopedy – hatred of children – in educational settings. Drawing on nine qualitative datasets, including interviews, ethnographic observations, questionnaire responses and literature, it argues that misopedy is a socially, collectively, and structurally produced system. The paper analyses discursive practices embedded in educational frameworks, showing how children are positioned as fundamentally flawed, lacking agency, and …
Do I have to wear mud pants? Mud pants as material agent in Finnish preschool
Mud pants have protected Finnish preschool children from dirt and water for many years. However, children do not like to wear them and educators in preschools feel that mud pants cause hard work. This contradiction made us wonder with mud pants. Drawing on relational–material approaches, we understand mud pants as material agent and ask the following question: How mud pants act as material agent in everyday relations in preschool? Our wondering s…
Teachers’ experiences of being unsettled within their relationships with parents
In this study, we focus on exploring teachers' stories of their relationships with parents in times of digital communication. Employing the concept of teachers' professional knowledge landscape, we inquire into Finnish teachers' experiences with WILMA, a digital system used for teacher-parent communication in Finland. We discuss how teachers' experiences shaped by WILMA may disrupt their stories to live by, their identities, in relation with pare…
Big and small, girls and boys
In this study, we argue that touch is a way of producing gender in preschool and our aim is to explore different kinds of matters that intersect with gendered touch practices in this context. Our theoretical starting points draw on the performativity of gender and the discursively constructed touch practices of early childhood educators. We analyse these discourses by employing intersectional analysis. The data consist of three group discussions …
Teachers' work today
This study employs narrative as a theoretical perspective and methodological approach, looking at the current nature of teachers' work from the viewpoint of 25 Finnish basic education teachers. Several categories such as multiple teacher roles and fragmentation of teachers' work, teamwork and multi-professional cooperation, pupils' diverse backgrounds, changed learning skills and behaviour, opportunities and challenges of digitalization, schools'…
Touch in children's everyday peer relations in preschools
The article explores how touch appears in children's everyday peer relations in preschools. The narrative research material consists of video recordings produced in four Finnish preschools. Touch in children's relations appeared as an invitation, an attempt to control and a conventional pattern. The findings show that narrative environments of the preschools produce, enable and limit touch in the children's everyday peer relations. In terms of to…
