  • The African Chapter in the Scientific Life of Professor Michał Kobusiewicz

    Open Access•R Schild•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Polona•2020

I met Micha for the first time in the spring of 1959 while recruiting young archaeologists to work on the excavation of the Final Palaeolithic and Mesolithic camps of Rydno Complex, a Stone Age red ochre quarry and socio-economic centre. A fresh MA in archaeology, I was then working as a field manager for Stefan Krukowski, an unorthodox prehistorian, directing work in the very significant Rydno Project in Central Poland. During the project, young…

  • An Artificial Human Tooth from the Neolithic Cemetery at Gebel Ramlah, Egypt

    Open Access•Joel D Irish, Przemysław Bobrowski et al.•ARTICLE•Dental Anthropology Journal•2018•Referencias: 1

Excavations at the Gebel Ramlah cemetery, in Upper Egypt’s Western Desert, have provided numerous data concerning mortuary practices of the local Final Neolithic period populace. Previous articles have chronicled treatment of disturbed inhumations, in which great care had been taken to recover and rebury all grave goods and skeletal elements including, most notably, dental remains. In several cases, the Neolithic gravediggers apparently went so f…

  • Here comes the rain again … The early Holocene El Adam occupation of the Western Desert, Nabta Playa, Egypt

Maciej Jórdeczka, Halina Królik et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2015

Further Neolithic encampments and settlements have been explored by the Combined Prehistoric Expedition in the Nabta Playa Basin on the southern border of Egypt's Western Desert around 100 km west of the Nile Valley. Site E-08-2 in Nabta Playa, excavated in 2008–2009, provided considerable new information on the El Adam settlement, which functioned in the younger phase of the El Adam horizon, sometime between 9000 and 8800 BP (c. 8200-8000 cal. B…

Further Neolithic encampments and settlements have been explored by the Combined Prehistoric Expedition in the Nabta Playa Basin on the South–Western Desert border around 100 km west of the Nile Valley. The perfectly preserved stratigraphic setting of the new site, numerous hearths and traces of dwellings, rich cultural material including pottery, radiocarbon dates and presence of bone remains render site E–06–1 an exception on the map of settlem…

  • Early Holocene pottery in the Western Desert of Egypt

Open Access•Maciej Jórdeczka, Halina Królik et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2011•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 22

Dated and stratified potsherds excavated at Nabta Playa belong to the earliest phase of pottery-making in the Sahara - relatively sophisticated bowls decorated with a toothed wheel. The authors explore the origins of post-Pleistocene settlers in the Sahara and the Nile Valley and discuss what prompted them to make pottery

Open Access•Jan Fiedorczuk, Bodil Bratlund et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2007•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 11

The remains of a hunting site dated to 15000 years ago, captured in an ice wedge, included woolly rhinoceros, horse and arctic fox. Also present were 30 flint plaquettes with curvy feminine outlines. The authors show that these unworn flint profiles can be assigned to a canon of Magdalenian art that extends over much of northern Europe

  • Short communication

    Open Access•Joel D Irish, Michał Kobusiewicz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2005•Referencias: 2

In a prior report we described human remains from the Neolithic cemetery at Gebel Ramlah, Egypt, with evidence of purposeful tooth replacement. Two crania, which were apparently disturbed by later burials, were found to contain several teeth that had been incorrectly reinserted into the jaws. Such treatment was suggested to be unique. Recent work at the site revealed a similarly unusual find. Two adult male skeletons, evidently displaced in antiq…

  • Discovery of the first Neolithic cemetery in Egypt’s western desert

    Open Access•MichaƗ Kobusiewicz, J Kabaciński et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2004•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 11

The authors report the discovery of a cemetery of richly furnished graves in the western desert of south Egypt. Artefacts, burial rites and radiocarbon dates relate the cemetery to pastoralists practising transhumance in the later Neolithic period. The first such cemetery to be investigated, its cultural affiliations offer a pre-echo of what would become the Egyptian civilisation

    Open Access•R Schild, Fred Wendorf•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2000•Referencias: 7

Except for the Kharga–Dakhla Depression in the north, Nabta Playa is probably the largest internally drained basin in the Southwestern Desert of Egypt. The center of the basin is filled with clastic materials, deposited from suspension during inundations. These finer-grained clastics interfinger with sandy beach deposits associated with early Holocene phytogenic dunes. The shores contain embedded Early Neolithic occupations ranging in age from ca…

The shuttle imaging radar experiment (SIR-A) in 1981 revealed a complex of previously unknown, channel-like features beneath the sandsheets of the Eastern Sahara. Since the age(s) and significance of these features could not be otherwise determined, a survey was undertaken of the archaeology of the region to provide at least a minimal age for them and to evaluate their potential as reservoirs of Pleistocene and Holocene rainfall. The results of t…

  • A New Radiocarbon Chronology for Prehistoric Sites in Nubia

Fred Wendorf, R Schild et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1979•Citada por: 6

The sequence of prehistoric cultural developments in Nubia has been regarded as one of the best-dated series in North Africa. Eighteen new dates obtained by redating of residues from previously dated samples and the processing of samples held in storage plus a series of recently excavated examples have indicated, however, the need for significant revision of the original chronology. Almost all of the new dates, whether derived from residues or fr…

The role of plants in the subsistence economy of pre-agricultural societies of the eastern Sahara is poorly known because vegetal remains, except for wood charcoal, are seldom found in archaeological sites. Site E-75-6 at Nabta Playa, with rich assemblages of charred seeds and fruits, is exceptional. Around 8000 b.p. the inhabitants of this site collected a wide spectrum of wild food plants. In the article, an ecological-demographic interpretation of great cultural shifts is attempted. The first of the two examples employed for this purpose is concerned with climatic changes and accompanying transformations in the cultural systems of human groups living on the European Plains around 9900-8300 B.C. In particular, the disappearance of characteristics for the Alleröde tool assemblages with arc-shaped blades (related to the warmer phase …

  • Are the early holocene cattle in the eastern sahara domestic or wild

    Open Access•Fred Wendorf, R Schild•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•1994

Questions relating to the antiquity of domestic cattle in the Sahara are among the most controversial in North African prehistory. It is generally believed that cattle were first domesticated in southwest Asia, particularly Anatolia, or in southeast Europe, where their remains have been found in several sites dated between 9,000 and 8,000 years ago.1 The discovery, in several small sites in the Western Desert of Egypt, of large bovid bones identi…
