Early Achievement Gaps and Their Associations with Preschool Contexts and Parental Engagement in Hong Kong
Research Findings: Wide achievement gaps closely linked to socioeconomic status (SES) are evident from an early age and persist globally. This study examined family SES-related achievement gaps across different developmental domains among preschool children in Hong Kong and the role of preschool SES and quality and parental engagement in these gaps. The participants were 877 preschoolers aged 3 to 5 years from 18 preschools in Hong Kong. Their ho…
A double‐blind randomized controlled trial of personalized upper‐alpha neurofeedback in children with ADHD
BACKGROUND: Neurofeedback (NF) is a nonpharmacological approach for ADHD, but standard protocols often overlook individual EEG variability, potentially limiting efficacy. We report the first double-blind randomized controlled trial of a session-adaptive individualized upper-alpha NF protocol in children with ADHD, based on individualized 1/f + alpha model. METHODS: Forty-eight children (6-12 years) diagnosed with ADHD were randomized to individua…
Associations between the Mediterranean lifestyle and incident age-related eye diseases
Background: The Mediterranean lifestyle (MEDLIFE) is generally considered to have a positive effect on several health outcomes. However, little is known about its impact on age-related eye diseases. We aimed to assess the effect of MEDLIFE on the risk of three such diseases: cataract, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: We included 113 829 participants from the UK Biobank who were free of age-related eye diseases at bas…
Assessing family influence on adolescent healthy eating
The study found positive effects of parental dietary knowledge, attitudes, and food parenting practices on adolescent KAP of healthy eating. Interventions to enhance these three family facilitators should be included in strategies for promoting KAP of healthy eating among adolescents
The Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Healthy Eating Questionnaire
Introduction: Identifying the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) gaps of healthy eating can inform the design of effective interventions. This study aimed to test the validity and psychometric properties of a KAP of Healthy Eating Questionnaire (KAP-HEQ) tailored to the Chinese culture. Methods: The dimensions and potential items of each KAP scale were identified from published KAP and health literacy questionnaires, which were supplemente…
Differential associations between Quantity, content, and context of screen time, and Children's health-related quality of life
Existing literature suggests that lengthy durations of screen time (ST) are associated with lower levels of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and other negative outcomes in children. Nonetheless, the current available evidence largely relies on cross-sectional studies. In addition, data on the content and context (parent–child co-use and solitary use) of ST are scarce. We set out to conduct a one-year, two-wave longitudinal study to investig…
Prospective associations of maternal stressors with child psychosocial problems through the occurrence of child physical abuse and changes in family dynamics
Early childbearing is associated with high maternal stress and family violence. However, the long-term effects of rapid repeat pregnancy (RRP) in young motherhood on child outcomes remain largely unknown. This study examined the pathways between maternal RRP at young ages and child psychosocial problems and emergency room visits in later years. A total of 232 Chinese mother-child dyads provided baseline data in 2015 (Time 1; T1) and follow-up dat…
Early‐life family and school impacts on adolescent conduct problems

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between family and school environments during early childhood and conduct problems in adolescence. In Wave 1 (W1), the study recruited 502 participants, aged 5–6 years, from Hong Kong local kindergartens, with 51.4% boys. One of their parents provided in…
Intimate Partner Violence Against Women Before, During, and After Pregnancy
Intimate partner violence (IPV) against pregnant women negatively impacts women’s and infants’ health. Yet inconsistent results have been found regarding whether pregnancy increases or decreases the risk of IPV. To answer this question, we systematically searched for studies that provided data on IPV against women before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and after childbirth. Nineteen studies met our selection criteria. We meta-analyzed the nineteen s…
Trajectories and predictors of depressive symptoms among pregnant women
The findings highlight the importance of screening for depression throughout pregnancy and extending several years postpartum. Distinguishing the different trajectories of depression and identifying its associated factors are critical to providing targeted interventions to the most vulnerable women (i.e., a relapsing/remitting group in the present study). Social, Community, and Cultural Factors Associated with Parental Stress in Fathers and Mothers
Parenting stress is a key factor in predicting the quality of parent−child relationships and child development outcomes. Previous research tends to focus on examining individual factors contributing to parental stress, with minimal attention to other important contextual factors that may affect parenting. This study examines the issue from a broader ecological perspective by investigating social, cultural, and community factors associated with pa…
Hygiene Practices and Early Childhood Development in the East Asia-Pacific Region

Six thousand six hundred ninety-seven children (4 [0.8] years) from the East Asia-Pacific Early Child Development Scales validation study were included in this cross-sectional analysi…
Who Is at High Risk for Child Abuse and Neglect
This exploratory study of risk factors for the co-occurrence of IPV and CAN advances our understanding of the causes of violence against women and children in families with violence. Our findings suggest that additional integrated services should be offered to both battered women and their children during their stay in shelters and after shelter departure. Addressing IPV and CAN and reducing adverse consequences needs greater collaboration among …

Including gaming disorder in the ICD-11: The need to do so from a clinical and public health perspective
The proposed introduction of gaming disorder (GD) in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) has led to a lively debate over the past year. Besides the broad support for the decision in the academic press, a recent publication by van Rooij et al. (2018) repeated the criticism raised against the inclusion of GD in ICD-11 by Aarseth et al. (2017). We argue that this…

Insecure Adult Attachment and Child Maltreatment
Extant evidence has shown that insecure adult attachment is related to dysfunctional parenting styles that heighten parents’ risk of child maltreatment. However, there is a lack of studies appraising the evidence for the association between insecure adult attachment and child maltreatment. This meta-analytic study examined the relationship between parents’ adult attachment and child maltreatment perpetration/child abuse potential. Studies examini…
Prevalence of Child Maltreatment and Its Association with Parenting Style

We investigated the association between parenting style and child maltreatment in Hong Kong, and examined whether family socio-economic status and child gender moderate this relationship. Using stratified random sampling, 7585 children in Grade 1 to Grade 3 of 51 schools in Hong Kong were recruited and their parents wer…
