A House on the Hill
New archaeobotanical and isotopic analyses from the lower Gypsades hill, Knossos provide a detailed snapshot of agricultural practices associated with a modest household during the Late Bronze Age, a few hundred metres to the south of the palace. The discovery of in situ charred concentrations of five pulse crops in a storage room enabled archaeobotanical and stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic investigations of the household’s agricultural pract…
Jaguars and raptorial birds
A range of scientific methods are used to explore the histories (14th-17th centuries) of a collection of wooden carvings from the Trombetas region of northeastern Brazil. • The first multidisciplinary scientific study of a rare group of Amazonian ceremonial wood carvings in 19th century museum collections. • Radiocarbon dating provides far deeper histories, with the earliest examples extending back to the 14th century. • Wood identification indic…

Towards a biologically available strontium isotope baseline for Ireland
Isotopic evidence for changing mobility and landscape use patterns between the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age in western Ireland

Absence of Saharan dust influence on the strontium isotope ratios on modern trees from the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands
We report on strontium ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) isotope results from 91 modern trees growing on the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands. The average 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratio of 0.709169±0.000010 is consistent with the late Quaternary limestone of the islands and with the modern ocean value. The absence of any detectable influence of 87 Sr-enriched Saharan dust is notable, given the known contribution of this material to both past and recent soils of the Caribb…

Mobility during the neolithic and bronze age in northern ireland explored using strontium isotope analysis of cremated human bone
OBJECTIVES: As many individuals were cremated in Neolithic and Bronze Age Ireland, they have not featured in investigations of individual mobility using strontium isotope analysis. Here, we build on recent experiments demonstrating excellent preservation of biogenic (87) Sr/(86) Sr in calcined bone to explore mobility in prehistoric Northern Ireland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A novel method of strontium isotope analysis is applied to calcined bone a…
Combining functional weed ecology and crop stable isotope ratios to identify cultivation intensity
This investigation combines two independent methods of identifying crop growing conditions and husbandry practices-functional weed ecology and crop stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis-in order to assess their potential for inferring the intensity of past cereal production systems using archaeobotanical assemblages. Present-day organic cereal farming in Haute Provence, France features crop varieties adapted to low-nutrient soils managed th…
Vessey Ponds
Vessey Ponds are a pair of irregularly-shaped hollows high on the Chalk Wolds of East Yorkshire at about 220 m OD (Fig. 1). Recent fieldwalking recovered a large flint scatter in the vicinity of these hollows. Mesolithic activity was represented by worked flint displaying soft hammer technology whereas hard hammer technologies indicate Neolithic and Bronze Age tool production and usage. The presence of large numbers of cores and a vast quantity o…
