  • Population Control Policies and Fertility Convergence

    Open Access•Tiloka De Silva, Silvana Tenreyro•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2017•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 24

Rapid population growth in developing countries in the middle of the 20th century led to fears of a population explosion and motivated the inception of what effectively became a global population-control program. The initiative, propelled in its beginnings by intellectual elites in the United States, Sweden, and some developing countries, mobilized resources to enact policies aimed at reducing fertility by widening contraception provision and cha…

  • Further simulation evidence on the performance of the Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood estimator

    Open Access•João Santos Silva, J M C Santos Silva et al.•ARTICLE•Economics Letters•2011

  • Volatility and Development

Miklós Koren, Silvana Tenreyro•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2007

Why is GDP growth so much more volatile in poor countries than in rich ones? We identify three possible reasons: (i) poor countries specialize in fewer and more volatile sectors; (ii) poor countries experience more frequent and more severe aggregate shocks (e.g., from macroeconomic policy); and (iii) poor countries' macroeconomic fluduations are more highly correlated with the shocks affecting the sectors they specialize in. We show how to decomp…

  • The Log of Gravity

Open Access•João Santos Silva, J M C Santos Silva et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2006

Although economists have long been aware of Jensen's inequality, many econometric applications have neglected an important implication of it: under heteroskedasticity, the parameters of log-linearized models estimated by OLS lead to biased estimates of the true elasticities. We explain why this problem arises and propose an appropriate estimator. Our criticism of conventional practices and the proposed solution extend to a broad range of applicat…

  • On the trade impact of nominal exchange rate volatility

    Open Access•Silvana Tenreyro•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2006•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 3

  • Closed and Open Economy Models of Business Cycles with Marked Up and Sticky Prices

    Open Access•Robert J Barros, Robert J Barro et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2006•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 21

Shifts in the extent of competition, which affect markups, are possible sources of aggregate fluctuations. Markups are countercyclical; during booms the economy operates more efficiently. In our benchmark model, markups correspond to the prices of differentiated inputs relative to that of undifferentiated final product. If nominal prices of differentiated goods are relatively sticky, unexpected inflation reduces markups, mimicking the effects of …
