Partnership duration, concurrency, and HIV in sub-Saharan Africa
A widely accepted explanation for the exceptionally high HIV prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa is the practice of long-term overlapping heterosexual partnering. This article shows that long-duration concurrent partnering can be protective against HIV transmission rather than promoting it. Monogamous partnering prevents sexual transmission to anyone outside the partnership and, in an initially concordant-seronegative partnership, prevents sexual ac…
Understanding the Southern African 'Anomaly
The epicentre of the global HIV epidemic is southern Africa. Previous explanations point to migration patterns and highly skewed income distribution, both thought to promote risky sexual behaviour. This study emphasizes the importance of common infectious and parasitic diseases that increase the likelihood of HIV transmission by increasing contagiousness and vulnerability to infection. Using multiple regression analysis on country-level data, the…
Cofactor infections and HIV epidemics in developing countries
This article shows that the burden of certain tropical disease infections, after controlling for other factors, is positively correlated with HIV prevalence. Using cross-national data and multivariate linear regression analysis, we investigate the determinants of HIV prevalence in low- and middle-income countries. We begin with social and economic variables used in other cross-national studies and then incorporate data on parasitic and infectious…
Sustainability and Ecuador's Flower Export Boom
Nontraditional or New Traditional Exports
This article seeks to explore the sources of the boom in flower exports from Ecuador in the last fifteen years. Rising from almost nothing in the late 1980s, fresh cut flowers now account for 8 percent of the country's nonpetroleum export earnings. The research attempts to establish whether trade liberalization and macroeconomic reforms played a decisive role in stimulating the export boom or whether changes in the global flower market created Ec…
The Mule, the South, and Economic Progress
This article examines the choice of draft animal in Southern agriculture in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century and shows that the preference for the mule over the horse reflected the South’s geography. The mule was well suited to the crops that dominated the region. The long, hot summers favored the heat-tolerant mule. The region’s geography made it difficult to produce good pastures and encouraged mule breeding to locate at …

Structural Reform and Industrial Promotion in Argentina
This article is a case study that shows the difficulty and complexity of structural adjustment by examining in great detail the reform of a single programme, the promotion of industrial investment in the less developed regions of Argentina. The article describes how the programme grew after 1956 when industrial promotion was first implemented so the reader can fully understand its intricate complexity. The reform process is described in detail, f…
Income Distribution and Environmental Degradation in the Argentine Interior
This article analyzes the environmental degradation of the Argentine interior, emphasizing the roles played by different income groups. Argentina beyond the pampa is composed of fragile ecosystems that have been substantially degraded through decades or even centuries of overuse and abuse. This study ascertains the nature and extent of environmental degradation for each part of the interior, the relative importance of various income groups in agr…

Urban Planning in the Soviet Union and China
Urban planning in the Soviet Union during the first decades after the revolution was characterized by daring new proposals, creative re-evaluation of existing plans, and vigorous debate. But the early experiments in urban design have been increasingly abandoned and in many important respects Soviet urban planning has come to resemble that of capitalist countries. At present the dominant school of urban planners and social scientists in the Soviet…
