Differential Glacio-Isostatic Uplift of Crustal Blocks at Glen Roy, Scotland
Detailed measurements of the altitudes of the shorelines of former ice-dammed lakes in Glen Roy and vicinity in the Scottish Highlands prove erroneous the conventional view that former shorelines in areas affected by glacio-isostatic uplift are uniformly tilted and/or gently warped. The measurements demonstrate differential uplift of blocks of the earth's crust. The surfaces of some blocks have no detectable tilt whereas others have gradients up …
The So-Called High 'Interglacial' Rock Shoreline of Western Scotland
It has been widely accepted for seventy years that a high (18-51 m) raised marine shoreline cut in rock in the Inner Hebrides is of 'preglacial' or interglacial age. Critical analysis of the literature and recent work on raised shorelines in Wester Ross shows that this interpretation is untenable. It is argued that the so-called shoreline is a series of isostatically tilted shorelines produced during the last and previous glacials by frost action…
A Former Ice-Dammed Lake and Associated Glacier Limits in the Achnasheen Area, Central Ross-Shire
Lake shorelines, delta terraces and fine lake-floor sediments show that an ice-dammed lake existed around the site of Achnasheen in Strath Bran in northern Scotland. Associated with the lake were overflow channels, areas of water-swept bedrock and cross-valley moraines. The lake existed between four glaciers that converged on the site of Achnasheen but failed to meet each other. The ice-dam was a major glacier that flowed into and across Strath B…

A Late-Glacial Ice Cap in the Central Grampians, Scotland
Using evidence provided by hummocky moraines, end moraines, till sheets, drift limits, erratics, meltwater channels, outwash deposits, ice-contact fluvioglacial forms and major periglacial forms, an ice cap (with associated outlet glaciers) that developed in the central Grampians in Late-glacial times is reconstructed using a three-dimensional approach. The former ice surface is contoured at 50 m intervals. The ice mass had an area of nearly 3oo …
Dislocation and Non-Uniform Uplift of Raised Shorelines in the Western Part of the Forth Valley
The gradients of the Main Post-glacial and Main Buried shorelines are compared over a distance of 37 km in the Forth valley. The High Buried Shoreline, which occurs in a small part of the area, is also considered. The Main Post-glacial Shoreline has been accurately levelled at 231 points, the Main Buried Shoreline at 132 points and the High Buried Shoreline at 50 points. These measurements show that the two extensive shorelines slope in three are…
