  • Iran's Free Trade Zones

    Open Access•Hassan Hakimian•ARTICLE•Iranian Studies•2011•Citada por: 2

Since the late 1980s, Iran has pursued a policy of attracting foreign investment and fostering regional trade by granting favored status to the so-called “Free Trade-Industrial Zones” (FTZs) and “Special Economic Zones” (SEZs). To date six FTZs and sixteen SEZs have been set up throughout Iran. The FTZs are strategically positioned for their potential international links and have their eyes on markets beyond Iran, and the SEZs for their value in …

  • From Demographic Transition to Fertility Boom and Bust

    Open Access•Hassan Hakimian•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2006•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 12

Although it is widely recognized that demographic transition is not an uninterrupted process, demographers and population economists have treated short-term swings in fertility with a measure of curiosity. Iran's experience of population growth after the Revolution in 1979 points to a double paradox of a steep and unprecedented surge in population growth in the 1980s followed by a swift restoration of fertility decline in the 1990s. Both periods …

  • Oil, Economic Diversification and the Democratic Process in Iran

    Open Access•Massoud Karshenas, Hassan Hakimian•ARTICLE•Iranian Studies•2005•Citada por: 5

Since 1979, Iran has witnessed important socio-economic and institutional changes and has been affected by significant economic and political upheavals. These years have witnessed a succession of oil booms and busts, external war, trade sanctions and of course, more recently, heightened internal strife within the state. After 25 years, however, Iran's political outlook seems opaque to most observers and the economic record is equally lacklustre w…

But what improves the circumstances of the greater part can never be regarded as an inconveniency to the whole. No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable

  • The impact of the 1970s' oil boom on Iranian agriculture

    Hassan Hakimian•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•1988•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 5

This article challenges the dominant strand of thinking on Iranian agriculture, which has hitherto stressed the depressing effects of the 1970s' oil boom on the rural economy. In highlighting the nature of the economic boom both in the rural and urban areas, it delineates new constraints imposed on agriculture and offers a new explanation as to its outcome. The precipitated outflow of agricultural workforce in this period is thus shown to have be…

  • Wage Labor And Migration

    Open Access•Hassan Hakimian•ARTICLE•International Journal Middle East…•1985•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 10

It is common knowledge of Iranian history that at the turn of the present century iran was undergoing important social transformations. A notable feature of this period that witnessed the rising movement for constitutional reforms was a heightening of social tensions and contradictions in a traditional society that had now become subject to potent forces of change from within and without. The disintegration of the political power of the Qajar dyn…
