  • Social Structure and Mass Communications Behavior

    Charles R Wright•CHAPTER•Idea of Social Structure•2017

The sociology of communications offers opportunities for the study of a wide spectrum of problems. Consideration of communications phenomena at the individual or personal level and at the level of socially organized mass communications introduces additional research opportunities and further complexity. A typical finding in commercial audience research relates communications behavior to a single social characteristic of the audience. In Social Th…

  • The command economy as an adaptive structure

    Open Access•Richard E Hilbert, Charles R Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Classical Sociology•2017

We open with a discussion of the Parsonian solution to the 'problem of order' in human societies, emphasising the functional significance of 'adaptive structures' in that solution. Adaptive structures adapt the dominant structure of a society to the realistic conditions of its existence. We then argue that the Command Economy of World War II is an example of an adaptive structure in that it adapted the American system of free-enterprise capitalis…

  • Sociology of Mass Communications

Josephine R Holz, Josephine Holz et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•1979•Citada por: 31•Referencias: 46

The study of mass communications is a broad, multidisciplinary field to which sociology has made major contributions. Some of these contributions have been reviewed in earlier works by Riley & Riley (1959), Larsen (1964), Janowitz (1968), McQuail (1969), Davison & Yu (1974), & Ball-Rokeach (1975), and Wright (1975a). Several chapters in Annual Review of Psychology, although not explicitly sociological in orientation, report on communication studi…

    Herbert H Hyman, Charles R Wright•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1971•Citada por: 54•Referencias: 10

A small but noteworthy increase in the percentage of American adults who belong to voluntary associations has occurred since the mid-1950's (the date of an earlier study of this topic by the authors), as documented through several replications of national sample surveys. These same replications also confirm a major generalization of the earlier study that such membership is less common than had been assumed; indeed, voluntary association membersh…

Can a valid sample of informed, knowledgeable experts from many countries be obtained to give reasonably reliable reports on the introduction of planned programs of change in developing countries? In other words, can public opinion survey methods be used to obtain expert information as well as general public opinion in cross-national studies of developing countries? In spite of many obstacles and difficulties, the authors of this paper believe th…

    Charles R Wright•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•1964•Citada por: 2

Personal interviews were conducted in 1951 with a random sample of graduate students during their first semester of enrollment in their departments in a large, major university. The interviews oovered four broad types of factors which are often alleged to contribute to 8tudent success or failure.
