  • A qualitative study of factors involved in the helping behaviors of suicide prevention gatekeepers

    Corentin Montiel, Brian L Mishara•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2023•Referencias: 5

This study explores the factors involved in the capacity of newly trained suicide prevention gatekeepers to engage in the identification and support of people at risk of suicide. In-depth telephone interviews were conducted with 18 gatekeepers from various settings who had participated in a larger quantitative study of the impact of gatekeeper training. Conventional content analysis was performed on the data collected. Participants said that gate…

  • Characteristics of Incel Forum Users

    Open Access•Stefan Stijelja, Brian L Mishara•ARTICLE•Studies in Conflict and Terrorism•2023•Citada por: 3

Incels, Involuntary Celibates, are men who both struggle with lack of sexual and romantic relationships and participate in online communities espousing a misogynistic ideology. This study characterizes users of three popular Incel forums. Using network analysis and community detection, we identify their main issues and interests and assess whether interests predated or followed their initial participation in an Incel forum. Results indicate that …

  • From involuntary incarceration to Medically Assisted Suicide

    Open Access•Brian L Mishara, David N Weisstub•ARTICLE•Ethics Medicine and Public Health•2022

Involuntary commitment of the mentally ill and forced treatment of suicidal persons are practiced worldwide, with underlying premises that contrast with the respect for autonomy upon which Medically Assisted Death (MAD) (euthanasia and assisted suicide) for the mentally ill is based. We trace the transition from paternalistic mass incarcerations to hospitalization only for dangerousness. In response to criticisms that predicting dangerousness is …

Godfrey Zari Rukundo, Eugene Kinyanda et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2016

The association between suicidality and HIV/AIDS has been demonstrated for three decades, but little is know about risk factors that can help understand this association and help identify who is most at risk. Few research studies have been conducted in sub-Saharan Africa, a region that accounts for more than 70% of the HIV global burden. This paper describes clinical risk factors for suicidality among individuals with HIV infection and AIDS disea…

  • Can CCTV identify people in public transit stations who are at risk of attempting suicide? An analysis of CCTV video recordings of attempters and a comparative investigation

Open Access•Brian L Mishara, Cécile Bardon et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

We conclude that real time observations of CCTV monitors, automated computer monitoring of CCTV signals, and/or training of drivers and transit personnel on behavioural indications of suicide risk, may identify attempters with few false positives, and potentially save lives

  • A Dynamic Developmental Model of Suicide

    Open Access•Brian L Mishara•ARTICLE•Human Development•2010

Based on the work by Prigogine and colleagues from physics and other ‘hard’ sciences, a method is presented for studying and developing models of the dynamics of developmental changes in complex open systems. The process of the development of suicide is analysed in terms of a dynamic model of changes in suicidal tendencies over time. Phase plane analysis based on this model indicates that fluctuations and discontinuities observed in clinical and …

  • Effects of Different Telephone Intervention Styles with Suicidal Callers at Two Suicide Prevention Centers

    Open Access•Brian L Mishara, Marc S Daigle et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•1997•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 30

To determine the relative effectiveness of telephone intervention styles with suicidal callers, researchers listened unobtrusively to 617 calls by suicidal persons at two suicide prevention centers and categorized all 66,953 responses by the 110 volunteer helpers according to a reliable 20‐category checklist. Outcome measures showed observer evaluations of decreased depressive mood from the beginning to the end in 14% of calls, decreased suicidal…

  • Thanatology Research from Québec

    Open Access•Brian L Mishara•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•1993

Researchers must be acutely aware of the emotional, environmental, and cultural context of studies as well as the dynamic interactions which are continually changing this context. This characterization of a major trend in French-speaking research in Quebec is well exemplified by the series of lectures on Death, Distress, and Solidarity that gave rise to the articles published in this special issue of Omega. The contributors have attempted to inco…

  • The Development of the Concept of Suicide in Children

    Open Access•Claude L Normand, Brian L Mishara•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•1992

This study evaluated the development of the concept of suicide in sixty children ages six to eleven. It was hypothesized that children's understanding of the concept of suicide would be related to their age, cognitive development, maturity of the concept of death, experiences with death and suicide, and attitudes toward suicide. Twenty children in each of the grades one, three, and five were interviewed using open-ended and structured questions t…

  • Kinesthetic Aftereffects and Individual Differences in Carryover effects

A Harvey Baker, Brian L Mishara•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1986

Prior research has found that individual differences in long-lasting carryover effects occur in the kinesthetic aftereffect (KAE) task both when the aftereffect inducing block was wider (I greater than T) and narrower (I less than T) than the test block. The present study found that such individual differences in carryover effects also occur for a no-aftereffect-induction control condition, with a magnitude approximately equal to that found for t…

  • Kinesthetic aftereffect and personality

A Harvey Baker, Brian L Mishara et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1976•Citada por: 1

Kinesthetic Aftereffect (KAE), once a promising personality index, has been abandoned by many investigators because of poor retest reliability and intermittent validity. In challenging this current consensus, we argue that (a) first-session KAE is valid; (b) poor retest reliability simply reflects later-session bias; (c) hence, multisession studies should not be used to assess validity without taking this bias into account. Those recent studies w…

    Open Access•Diane Caldwell, Brian L Mishara•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•1973

From a sample of seventy-three medical doctors, thirteen interviews were conducted regarding the physician's attitudes toward the dying patient. A majority of those refusing interviews did so only when the nature of the topic of discussion was revealed. This research experience indicates a general reluctance on the part of physicians to discuss their attitudes toward death. Contradictions revealed in the responses of the physicians who were inter…

  • Kinaesthetic after‐effect, organismic state and retest reliability

Open Access•Irene Kostin, Irene Wolk Kostin et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1978

Earlier research demonstrated that exposure to the first administration of the kinaesthetic after‐effect (KAE) task differentially biases second (and later) session KAE scores. This bias results in low retest reliability. Here we explore the hypothesis that variation in organismic state also affects KAE retest reliability. A significant retest correlation was found for subjects classified as consistent in organismic state ( r = 0·349), but not fo…

  • Menstrual cycle affects kinesthetic aftereffect, an index of personality and perceptual style

A Harvey Baker, Brian L Mishara et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1979•Referencias: 1

Research suggests that kinesthetic aftereffect (KAE) scores reflect status on a postulated stimulus intensity modulation (SIM) mechanism that damps down subjective stimulus intensity for some (reducing) and increases it for others (augmenting). Such a mechanism would help account for empirically observed individual differences in such behaviors as pain tolerance, sensory deprivation reactivity, and stimulation seeking. It was hypothesized and con…

This paper describes experiences with suicidality among college students. Of 140 students in two samples who responded to questionnaires, all but 13 reported contact with peers who expressed suicidal intentions or attempted suicide, and/or expressed suicidal feelings or attempted suicide themselves. These verbalizations of suicidal feelings and attempts are described, and a model of the effectiveness of prevention of suicide by means of appropria…
