Generative AI (GenAI) has had a significant impact across industries since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. Much of the focus of existing research in the higher education space has considered the impact GenAI has had on academics and institutions. Conversely, research has been less focused on the impact this technology will have on students. Our research investigates how GenAI impacts student learning outcomes in higher education. We applied a…

  • The case for scaling authentic learning across undergraduate and postgraduate research skills courses

Jason I Pallant, Jessica L Pallant et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching in Higher Education•2024

Authentic learning is gaining popularity in higher education, particularly for courses related to research skills, where authentic assessments can overcome trepidation from both students and faculty. Prior literature has demonstrated the potential value of authentic client-based projects (CBPs) in such settings. However, questions remain about how best to scale authentic learning across different student cohorts, including both undergraduate and …

  • Authentic learning and job readiness

Open Access•Mark E Pickering, Ryan Jopp et al.•ARTICLE•Australasian Journal of…•2024

Advances in technology have significantly enhanced the quality of mixed-reality simulations, incorporating both real and virtual aspects. Mixed-reality simulations have been used to develop individual knowledge, skills and abilities in higher education; however, the use of such simulations to introduce authentic learning activities into higher education courses remains under-researched. In the current paper, we detail the design, implementation, …

  • Information source and tourist expenditure

Hassan D Kalantari, Ryan Jopp et al.•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2023

Travel information is omnipresent. Yet, the relationship between the source of travel information and tourist expenditure remains underexplored. To address this gap, the present study examines how the source of travel information used by tourists, both pre-trip and in-destination, impacts on tourist expenditure. Using survey data collected from tourists who visited Sarawak, Malaysia prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, this study is among the first of…

  • Tourist segments of eco-cultural destinations

Ryan Jopp, Hassan D Kalantari et al.•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2022

This research examines tourist segmentation of eco-cultural destinations via travel motivations. Factor analysis indicates that ego, escape, nature, new experience, and social seeking motivate tourist visits, whereas cluster analysis reveals want-it-alls, novelty seekers, and moderates as tourist segments in eco-cultural destinations. Recommendations for tourism policy, planning, and promotion are provided

  • Choose your own assessment – assessment choice for students in online higher education

Ryan Jopp, Jay Cohen•ARTICLE•Teaching in Higher Education•2022

On the back of recent assessment choice projects this study seeks to reimagine higher education assessment as a means of shifting the ‘locus of control’ from the teacher to the student. Central to this shift is the belief that a flexible assessment approach will promote self-regulation in learners, increased self-efficacy and, subsequently academic engagement and performance. This paper details the design, setup and configuration of assessment ch…

  • Using a Regional Tourism Adaptation Framework to Determine Climate Change Adaptation Options for Victoria's Surf Coast

Ryan Jopp, Terry Delacy et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism…•2012•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

This paper reports research into adaptation to climate change for regional tourism destinations. It explains the application of a regional tourism adaptation framework model to the Surf Coast destination, within the state of Victoria, Australia. It then examines the usefulness of the framework model in guiding a vulnerability resilience assessment of the destination and developing strategies to increase the destinations resilience, resistance and…
