Can standardized testing be used to promote equity in university admissions? A South African case study
Students’ experiences of the value of lectures for their learning
There is limited contemporary evidence around students’ experience of lectures, notwithstanding critiques of their value. This study focuses on second-year chemical engineering students across four institutions in England and South Africa. The analysis of student interviews identified three themes describing what students value in lectures. In terms of interaction, they valued simply being able to ask questions. In terms of explanations, pacing w…
Knowledge-building in higher education research
The question of whether academic development and higher education research can be considered fields is one of ongoing significance, centred on debates about knowledge-building. This study analyses the published outputs of a highly influential South African scholar, Suellen Shay, to identify the characteristic modes of knowledge generation that she used. The analysis of a dataset of nine key articles shows how Shay’s work arose from daily concerns…
Researching inequality in higher education
Fifty years ago, higher education globally had started to change radically in terms of the proportion of young people enrolled in the system as well as society’s expectations for what this would deliver. From the outset, Higher Education has featured research interrogating various aspects of inequality in higher education, including institutions and staff as well as students. This article offers an overview of that work. Our analysis is structure…
Answering a Call to Action
Using various strategies, the City University of New York—a large, public, urban university system—engaged hundreds of faculty across 15 colleges in integrating the Common Core state standards (CCSS) in college coursework. Against the backdrop of a dynamic political climate, this CCSS initiative is described along with findings from a descriptive, mixed-methods evaluation study that examined changes in teacher preparation programs and faculty. Da…
From contradictions to complementarities
Academic development is a recent project in the university, intended to enable the university to respond to the needs of a more diverse student body. In South Africa, such work arose during late apartheid, and has now moved to a more central institutional position advocating responsiveness in the light of the educational disparities that are the legacy of apartheid. The present study uses a social realist perspective to analyse the 25-year evolut…
A social realist perspective on student learning in higher education
Contemporary critiques of student learning research call for new theoretical and methodological approaches. This article proposes a social realist approach to this research, using the morphogenetic theory of sociologist Margaret Archer. The applicability of this approach is demonstrated by reference to an empirical study of engineering students at a South African university, using narrative analysis. In the article itself, two narratives are give…
Emergent interactions
The relationship between teaching and learning is represented in contemporary higher education research which has looked at the correlations between students' approaches to learning and teachers' approaches to teaching. This article proposes a rethinking of this relationship, building on a critical realist perspective. Here, the teaching–learning interaction is argued to be emergent from the activities of teaching and of learning, and it is this …
What do student learning inventories really measure? A critical analysis of students' responses to the Approaches to Learning and Studying Inventory
Student learning inventories are used by both researchers and educators as tools to identify ‘at risk’ students. This article critically interrogates the results of one of these inventories, the 18-item Approaches to Learning and Studying Inventory. In-depth interviews were held with a purposive sample of 10 first-year engineering students who had completed the inventory. During interviews, students were asked to elaborate on their responses for …
