Politicized Demography and Biomedical Authority in Post-Soviet Russia
We explore obstetrician-gynecologists' (ob-gyns') shifting involvement in late Soviet and post-Soviet reproductive politics and track broader political-economic dynamics of the profession's ambivalent relations with state demographic discourses. While editing this collection of articles exploring the geographies and styles of emotionalisation of public domains, we observed a veritable eruption of emotionalised public discourse in real-time: the COVID-19 pandemic. On some level this was only natural, since the pandemic generates sickness, pain, suffering, the primordial fear of death, and a general sense of existential uncertainty. This article traces the conceptual emergence and development of feminist-oriented abortion politics in urban Russia between 2011 and 2015. Examined as an example of local adaptions of global reproductive rights movements, Russians’ advocacy for abortion access reflects commitments and tensions characterising post-Soviet feminism. Legacies of 1917 in Contemporary Russian Public Health
I examine the legacies of Soviet public health policy and the socialist health care system and trace how the Soviet past figures in contemporary Russian policymaking and debates about drug use, HIV, and abortion. Drug policies and mainstream views of HIV reflect continuities with key aspects of Soviet-era policies, although political leaders do not acknowledge these continuities in justifying their policies.
