  • Shadow education as local education policy

    Open Access•Jorge Celis•ARTICLE•Education Inquiry•2026•Referencias: 55

This article investigates how Colombia’s decentralised Secretariats of Education (SoE) institutionalise exam-oriented preparation for Sabre 11, the mandatory upper-secondary exit exam governing higher-education access. These state-procured services are conceptualised as shadow education, satisfying Bray’s canonical criteria – supplementary nature, academic focus, and fee-based delivery – while functioning as a publicly financed, contract-based mo…

  • Universities as providers of shadow education at upper-secondary education level

    Open Access•Jorge Celis•ARTICLE•Higher Education•2025

This article examines the role of Colombian universities as institutional providers of fee-based test-preparatory courses for the Saber 11 examination, the national high-stakes upper-secondary exit exam used for admission to higher education. Drawing on the concept of promotional shadowing, the study conceptualizes university-led preparatory courses as hybrid initiatives that combine pedagogical support with market-oriented recruitment strategies…

  • Rejection and mutation of discourses in curriculum reforms

Open Access•Pedro Pineda, Jorge Celis•ARTICLE•Journal of Curriculum Studies•2022

Previous work has not yet comparatively studied which forms of peace education (PE) have been adopted in national laws. Through content analysis of policy documents, we seek to find out why the Colombian Congress established PE as mandatory content across all educational levels in 2014 in a postwar phase, while the German Standing Conference of Ministers of Education rejected attempts to implement PE since the Cold War. Whereas the German school …

  • “Get Two Degrees for the Price of One”

Pedro Pineda, Jorge Celis et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Education Review•2022

Double degrees have been identified in universities around the globe. The Colombian double degree is a local hybrid of the American double major and the local profession-enabling pregrado that universities, particularly elite private ones, marketize in a context of mass higher education, devaluation of first university degrees and a weak economy ensuing from social conflict. Through a narrative approach, we found that students learn to pursue two…

  • School choice, institutional environments and the precarisation of teachers’ working conditions in not-for-profit charter schools

Open Access•Pedro Pineda, Diego Salazar Morales et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 39

This article explores the effects of charter schools on teachers’ working conditions in Bogota (Colombia). By employing a semi-experimental approach involving Propensity Score Matching (PSM) and Difference-in-Differences (DID), we find that in the close vicinity (postcode area) of where they are established, charter schools more than double teachers’ workload for a comparatively small increase in salaries. In light of a neo-institutional approach…

  • The worldwide spread of peace education

Pedro Pineda, Jorge Celis et al.•ARTICLE•Globalisation Societies and…•2019•Referencias: 17

To investigate the spread of peace education (PE), we examined 685 documents in SCOPUS between 1970 and 2018 in 70 countries and triangulated the information with 11369 news articles and 22 international organisationś founding dates. PE emerged in scientific databases in the 1970s, lost momentum in 1990 and then globalised after 2003. PE’s institutionalisation was furthered by: (a) the increasing search for discourses that highlighted individual …

  • On interculturality and Decoloniality

Pedro Pineda, Jorge Celis et al.•ARTICLE•Compare A Journal of Comparative…•2019•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 8

The educational agenda of indigenous groups is in tension with the expansion of schooling. The authors follow an ethnographic approach to analyse an educational programme that seeks to preserve indigenous knowledges in a megacity. The initiative promotes daily activities with the communities’ native educational counsellor called apoyo pedagógico and the supervision of the sabedor (wiseman). The programme seems to: (1) apply the concept of intercu…

  • Industrial Ph.D. Programs for the Strengthening of the Industry's Production of Innovation in Colombia

    Open Access•Jorge Celis, Orlando Acosta•ARTICLE•Innovar•2016•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

Today's firms face a new global economy powered by knowledge rather than physical resources and natural raw materials. Universities are crucial actors in ensuring economic development, not only by training highly qualified human capital, but also by producing new knowledge with innovation potential. University–industry research collaborations (UICs) have been increasingly recognized as an innovation mode. Highly qualified people, mainly at Ph.D. …

  • Diez pilares para un programa de desarrollo profesional docente centrado en el aprendizaje de los estudiantes

Open Access•Mauricio Duque, Jorge Celis et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Colombiana de Educación•2014

Students’ learning has become the principal factor of quality in education. Sev- eral studies point out that the teachers’ ability to teach has an impact on learning. The recent literature highlights different approaches to developing this ability. Based on research carried out over the last two decades, this article presents ‘10 pillars’ that can contribute to the formulation of programs addressed to foster situated professional development of i…
