  • Dyads and silences

    Open Access•Sara Wasson•ARTICLE•Cultural Geographies•2026

This article reflects on the ethics and craft choices of writing about the at-risk ancient temperate rainforests of Coed Felenrhyd and Ceunant Llennyrch in North Wales. These are sessile-oak-predominant biomes, their light-dappled understory supporting rare plants, animals, fungi and lichen. These habitats are increasingly at risk. This article draws on critical plant studies to reflect on the ethics of plant representation via Patricia Vieira’s …

  • Strange and Tender Fracture

    Sara Wasson•ARTICLE•Literature and medicine•2023

How might flash writing be useful in communicating chronic pain? This question drove the UKRI AHRC-funded project Translating Chronic Pain at Lancaster University (2017–2019), which focused on the potential of fragmentary, episode-driven forms. This article examines how the ultra-short form and navigation architectures of the Translating Pain online anthology facilitate a polyphony of responses to pain that neither deny the validity of distress n…

  • Waiting, strange

    Open Access•Sara Wasson•ARTICLE•Medical Humanities•2021•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 6

People who receive a 'solid' organ transplant from a deceased person may experience imaginative challenges in making sense of how the transfer impacts their own past and future, as shown in existing scholarship. Building on such work, this article considers how the temporalities of medical encounter itself may also become temporally ambiguous, posing representational challenges both pre-transplantation and post-transplantation. The dominant narra…

  • Before narrative

    Open Access•Sara Wasson•ARTICLE•Medical Humanities•2018•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 15

This article suggests that some illness experience may require a reading practice less concerned with narrative coherence or self-authorship, and more interested in the value of textual fragments, episodes and moments considered outside a narrative framework. Chronic pain can pose multiple challenges to the narrative orientations celebrated in both 'survivorship' discourse and classic medical humanities scholarship. In its recalcitrance to cure, …

  • Barriers and facilitators of consumer use of nutrition labels at sit-down restaurant chains

    Open Access•Amy H Auchinclo, Amy H Auchincloss et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2013

Objective Numerous localities have mandated that chain restaurants post nutrition information at the point of purchase. However, some studies suggest that consumers are not highly responsive to menu labelling. The present qualitative study explored influences on full-service restaurant customers’ noticing and using menu labelling. Design Five focus groups were conducted with thirty-six consumers. A semi-structured script elicited barriers and fac…

  • Coven of the Articulate”

    Open Access•Sara Wasson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Popular Culture•2012•Referencias: 3

Anne Rice's twelve vampire “autobiographies” continue to be hugely influential for vampire fiction and other artifacts of popular culture. This article explores two tropes which structure and enable the vampire communities throughout the twelve texts. Both are crucially gifts: the “Dark Gift” of blood to be swallowed, and the gift of autobiography to be shared. Anthropological gift theory is a fruitful tool for analyzing the way exchange function…

  • Urban Gothic of the Second World War

Open Access•Sara Wasson•BOOK•Urban Gothic of the Second World…•2010

This book examines writing in the Gothic mode which subverts the dominant national narrative of the British home front. Instead of seeing wartime experience as a site of fellowship and emotional resil
