Qur’anic Orality and Textual Epistemologies of the Humanities
This article argues that the Qur’an presents an epistemology that can recenter the categories underlying modern understandings of religion and knowledge. This is done through an examination of the role of orality, textuality, writing, and listening in relation to the Qur’an. The article consists of two parts: first, a synthesis and intervention of the research on the construction of the modern category of religion is brought together with a discu…

The Mediated Qur’an
This article considers the role of media in relation to memorization and recitation of the Qur’an and modern religious education. Specifically, it considers the example of the online program of distance learning for recitation and memorization of the Qur’an as developed and maintained under the auspices of the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs in the state of Oman in the Arab Gulf region. The online learning program presents an example…
Canon Fodder and Conscripted Genres
The Hogarth Shakespeare novels bring into focus several features emerging in the encounter between Shakespeare and fiction writing. Hogarth’s ostensibly ‘new’ version of serial Shakespearean publication intersects in provocative ways with both historical adaptations, like Mary Cowden Clarke’s Girlhood of Shakespeare’s Heroines , and with current, less high-profile Shakespearean novels. In the context of current serial adaptations, the Hogarth nov…
Muslim Environmentalisms
While the global environmental crisis has escalated rapidly in recent years, work at the intersection of Islamic Studies and Environmental Studies is a newly developing area, to which Anna Gade’s Muslim Environmentalisms: Religious and Social Foundations presents a significant contribution. While the most immediate readership of the work would be those interested in the intersection of those fields, the book makes a broad claim that critically en…
Feeling the words
Twentieth-century Egyptian thinker Sayyid Qutb has been studied most extensively with respect to his political thought. In his early career, however, he published works of literary criticism, poetry, and works on the Qur'an in which he takes a literary approach. Among these is his 1945 work Al-Taswir al-Fanni fi al-Qur'an (Artistic Imagery in the Qur'an), in which he presents a unified theory of Qur'anic style called artistic imagery (al-taṣwīr a…
The Experience of the Recited Qurʾan
In this thought piece, I use the recited Qurʾan as a case study for asking what it may mean to feel sound—and more specifically, “religious sound,” or sound in a religious context. A range of scholars, including myself, have asked related questions about what the recited Qurʾan sounds like, and why it may sound the way(s) it does. Here I consider the sound of the Qurʾan on the level of experience or nondiscursive meaning, asking what the recited …
Harlequin Presents
Throughout the late twentieth century and in to the millennium, we have grown accustomed to Shakespearean allusions in several forms of mass culture. Not only does a talking Jack Russell terrier play Prince Hal, Romeo, and Ariel on assorted episodes of the PBS show Wishbone, but the novelizations of those episodes rewrite Shakespeare for the terrier’s audience. From a Romeo and Juliet Pokémon episode (with warring Pokémon masters owning a pair of…
Shakespeare's Unruly Women
While Shakespeare did not create rebellious feminists in the modern sense of the term, nevertheless it is fascinating to see the variety of ways his heroines operate in, rebel against, attempt to rule, or are crushed by a hierarchical, male-oriented social structure.Shakespeare's Unruly Women examines the ways in which the Victorian period interpreted Shakespeare's characters according to their own notions of what it meant to be a woman. It inclu…

The Texts of Twelfth Night
To all appearances, Twelfth Night has one of the least problematic texts in the Shakespearean canon. Unlike Hamlet and King Lear, each with one Folio and one or more Quarto versions, Twelfth Night has a single text because the play only appears in the Folio. Moreover the Folio edition is remarkably clean and free of error. Consequently, the text of Twelfth Night appears particularly stable. Only the most extreme of textual critics would claim tha…
