Open Access•Maris Boyd Gillette, Maris Gillette et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of University Teaching…•2026

Since generative artificial intelligence (genAI) applications became widely available in November 2022, university students and teachers have confronted choices about using genAI in coursework, research, and other tasks. • Documenting, Dramatizing, and Representing C hina's Porcelain World in Broken Pots Broken Dreams

    Open Access•Maris Boyd Gillette, Maris Gillette•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology Review•2014•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 15

In this essay, I argue that a successful ethnographic film, like a good story, responds both to its film subjects and to its audience's expectations. I discuss why I made a film about J ingdezhen's porcelain workers (as opposed to a text) and the relationships, goals, ideas, and constraints that influenced the final film. I contextualize my process in a broader discussion of documentary and ethnographic filmmaking, looking at representation in do…

  • Process and Product in Collaborative Media

    Maris Gillette•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•2011

For two years between 2008 and 2010, I worked as a facilitator for a Philadelphia-based non-profit community media organization on a project where local people spoke out about the value of their own communities through the creation of a short documentary films. My job was to help community members tell the story that they wanted to tell, while ensuring that it met scholarly standards for historical and ethnographic research. In each of the two fi…

  • Copying, Counterfeiting, and Capitalism in Contemporary China

    Open Access•Maris Boyd Gillette, Maris Gillette•ARTICLE•Modern China•2010•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 7

Eight months of ethnographic fieldwork in Jingdezhen between 2003 and 2006 revealed that copying and counterfeiting dominated porcelain production. Ideas about markets and the organization of production encouraged ceramists to copy and counterfeit in search of profit. At the same time, producers responded to others’ fraudulent acts by personalizing their market participation. Their network building was motivated by the belief that individuals wit…

Maris Boyd Gillette, Maris Gillette•ARTICLE•The Journal of Asian Studies•2008•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 11

This article discusses how contemporary Chinese Muslims in the city of Xi'an remember a massive conflict between Muslims and non-Muslims that devastated northwest China in the Tongzhi period (1862–74) of the Qing dynasty. Every year on the seventeenth day of the fifth lunar month, local Hui hold a series of mourning rituals for the Muslims who died at that time. They recount stories about these events during the ritual and in other settings. The …

    Maris Boyd Gillette, Maris Gillette•ARTICLE•Asian Anthropology•2006•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 24

In this essay I investigate the interplay of personal, cultural, and official meanings in a brief autobiographical narrative told to me by a 79 year-old Chinese Muslim (Hui) woman from the old Muslim district of Xi'an in Shaanxi Province (China). Ethnographers of China have investigated the role that state discourse plays in Chinese citizens' historical narratives. Official discourse is said to constitute Chinese citizens' subjectivity and Chines…
