  • Introduction: Eclipse of internationalism? The late twentieth-century liberal moment

    Open Access•Celia Donert, Stefan-Ludwig Hoffmann et al.•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2024

The end of the Cold War ushered in a new era of liberal internationalism — of democracy, free markets, the rule of law, and individual human rights on a global scale. In this new world, states cooperated peacefully with each other through international institutions and were held in check by ‘global civil society’, the network of newly founded transnational NGOs. Now, after the killing fields and failed utopias of the twentieth century, was the ti…

    Open Access•Celia Donert, Julia Moses•ARTICLE•Gender & History•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 5

This short essay introduces the forum on ‛Women's Rights as Human Rights: Global Contestations over the Longue Durée’. • Women's Rights as Human Rights after the End of History

    Open Access•Celia Donert•ARTICLE•Gender & History•2023•Referencias: 14

This article is based on the 2022 Gender & History annual lecture. It reconsiders the recent history of women's rights as human rights. The collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union brought to an end a twentieth‐century discourse of women's rights, understood not only as legal norms, but as a political language harnessed to a narrative of women as a collective subject progressing towards emancipation and equality. This was enab…

  • Transatlantic Socialist Feminisms in the Cold War World

    Open Access•Celia Donert•ARTICLE•International Review of Social…•2022

This review essay engages with Dorothy Sue Cobble's For The Many: American Feminists and the Global Fight for Democratic Equality from the perspective of European histories of socialist feminism during the Cold War. The essay suggests three themes that might lead to further discussion. These concern first of all the role of left-Catholic as well as Social Democratic women within the networks that Cobble describes in For the Many ; second, the inf…

  • Women's Rights and Global Socialism: Gendering Socialist Internationalism during the Cold War

    Open Access•Celia Donert•ARTICLE•International Review of Social…•2022•Citada por: 7

This Special Issue explores the complicated relationship between women's rights and global socialism during the Cold War. This Introduction describes how the articles deal with this relationship in three, partly overlapping, periods. The first set of articles looks at how the ethos of the Popular Front resonated among women's movements in Asia, Latin America, and Europe, and examines the connections between interwar anti-fascist and anti-imperial…

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the emergence of “Roma health and wellbeing” as a focus of attention in European research and in policy and the possible detrimental consequences of action founded on a generic representation of “Roma health.” Design/methodology/approach Based on discussions with and research conducted by scholars who work directly with Roma communities across European regions from a wide range of academic disciplin…

  • New Scholarship on Central and Eastern Europe

Open Access•Celia Donert, Emily Greble et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2017

A steady stream of creative new scholarship on Central and Eastern Europe has been arriving at the desks of reviews editors in Contemporary European History . Commissioning and editing essays on this scholarship has persuasively demonstrated its wider importance, not least in challenging the ambiguous and arbitrary line that continues to divide European historiography between East and West. We have therefore taken the decision to present the foll…

  • Gender History in a Transnational Perspective: Biographies, Networks, Gender Orders, ed. Oliver Janz and Daniel Schönpflug

    Celia Donert•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2017

Transnational history and gender history both grapple with, in the words of Merry Wiesner-Hanks, the ‘crossing, blurring, and transcendence of borders’ (‘Crossing Borders in Transnational Gender History’, Journal of Global History [2011]), whether these boundaries are created by geography, politics, biology or cultural constructions of sexuality and gender. Until recently, the two fields were rarely brought into dialogue, although this is now rap…

  • From Communist Internationalism to Human Rights: Gender, Violence and International Law in the Women's International Democratic Federation Mission to North Korea, 1951

    Open Access•Celia Donert•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2016•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 11

In May 1951 the Women's International Democratic Federation – a communist-sponsored non-governmental organisation – sent an all-female international commission to investigate the war crimes and atrocities allegedly committed by United Nations forces against civilians during the military occupation of North Korea in late 1950. Communist internationalism has been relatively marginalised in the recent wave of scholarship on internationalism and inte…

• Women's Rights in Cold War Europe: Disentangling Feminist Histories

    Celia Donert•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2013•Citada por: 3

In 1945 the UN Charter became the first international declaration to refer to the equal rights of women as well as men in support of fundamental human rights and peace, and against the ‘scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind’. 1 This declaration was undoubtedly a landmark in the internationalization of women’s rights. 2 Human rights, rather than the principle of nationality that had been intended to secur…

  • Protest Beyond Borders: Contentious Politics in Europe Since 1945

Lorenzo Bosi, Eduardo Romano et al.•BOOK•Protest Beyond Borders•2011

The protest movements that followed the Second World War have recently become the object of study for various disciplines; however, the exchange of ideas between research fields, and comparative research in general, is lacking. An international and interdisciplinary dialogue is vital to not only describe the similarities and differences between the single national movements but also to evaluate how they contributed to the formation and evolution …
