Children’s experiences of inclusion through a concentric spatial lens
This paper examines how children in autism-specific classes co-located in mainstream schools experienced inclusion through the lens of a spatial concentric theory. Drawing on qualitative data from classrooms in both Ireland and the United States, we apply the concentric / diametric spatial theory to explore how children in special classes experienced inclusion in school. Friendships, Rejection, and Standardized Test Scores Over Time
Peer acceptance has been consistently linked with academic performance. Acceptance, however, is often a measure of overall peers' impressions of a child, and not their own interest in being friends. Friendship nominations reflect a stronger, more persistent, peer endorsement than acceptance, and rejection nominations, similarly, reflect more direct negative feelings. Where Is the Real Reform? African American Students and Their School’s Expectations for Academic Performance
Although education reforms have been designed to improve academic achievement for all students, there may be intervening factors, such as teacher expectations, that interfere with the success of these initiatives. This ethnographic case study examined student and teacher perspectives on an urban high school reform, and how that reform was experienced within the classroom by African American students. Findings suggest that these African American s…
Replicating Evidence-Based Practices with Flexibility for Perinatal Home Visiting by Paraprofessionals
There are many explanations for the failure to find significant benefits: insufficient statistical power; the benefits of repeated assessments by warm, supportive peers to improve outcomes; or the failure of EBP and the need to maintain replication with fidelity. All study mothers had better outcomes than documented among comparable published samples of low-income, Latina and Korean-American mothers in Los Angeles, CA. ClinicalTrials.gov registra…

This one-year ethnographic case study focused on students of color from a West Coast High School who faced a variety of academic challenges. Collectively, they shared perspectives on school improvement, and among the recommendations was the importance of mentorship in the classroom to develop students' aspirational, navigational, and informational capital for academic resiliency, high expectations, and success. This article highlights the perspec…
Non-occupational post exposure prophylaxis as a biobehavioral HIV-prevention intervention
This project evaluated the feasibility and safety of a community-planned and financed program of non-occupational post exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) for 100 individuals. Individuals seeking nPEP within 72 hours of a potential HIV exposure were provided 28-day treatment using twice-daily lamivudine and zidovudine. Participants received a physical examination, HIV test and medications and were scheduled for follow-up counseling and data visits to 26-…
