This is an ethnographic account of the transnational caregiving experiences and practices of Australian migrants and refugees, caring for their elderly parents in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and New
Long-distance migrants and family support
The paper discusses what kind of mutual support and care-giving occurs between Dutch migrants residing in Australia and their parents 'back home' in the Netherlands. Specific case study examples are used to document the effect of long-distance, as well as situationally determined factors related to joint family history and past experience on migrants' ability to participate in their family support networks.Key Words: aged carecaregivingfamily sup…
Migrants and Their Parents
This article reports findings from exploratory interviews with migrants involved in caregiving for elderly parents who have remained 'back home.' The findings indicate that such distant carers make an important contribution to the caring process through letters, phone calls, and caregiving visits. This is a contribution that has not been recognized in literature on aged care. The study also shows that such caregiving may involve an ongoing dialog…

The purpose of the paper is to describe and contrast public policies regarding the participation of older people in volunteer work in three countries: the United States, Australia and the Netherlands. Data were collected in 1997–1998 through analysis of policy documents and through 50 interviews with researchers, policy makers and volunteer co-ordinators.
