Parental employment quality and the mental health and school performance of children and youth
BACKGROUND: Lower-quality employment, characterised by excessive or part-time hours, irregular schedules and inadequate earnings, is a key social determinant of health among adults. Research examining parental employment quality in relation to the mental health and school performance of children is lacking. The study objective was to measure the associations between parental employment quality and child mental health symptoms and school performan…
Parental employment quality during childhood and mental health in adolescence
Socioeconomic conditions play an important role in shaping the mental health outcomes of children and youth. Socioeconomic disadvantage in early life is often a product of precarious parental employment. Patterns of poverty exposure and children’s trajectories of externalizing and internalizing behaviors
Using data from the Child Supplement of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, we compare trajectories of externalizing and internalizing behaviors among children exposed to five patterns of poverty from birth to age 14: always or never poor - stable patterns; a single transition into or out of poverty, or repeated fluctuations in and out of poverty - changing patterns. We also examine how low maternal education and single parenthood interact…
Lessons Learned in Using Community-Based Participatory Research to Build a National Diabetes Collaborative in Canada
The CIRCLE national CBPR multisite collaborative is unprecedented in Canada, and provides a feasible model for other studies. Using CBPR on a national scale exacerbates challenges commonly faced with single-site or multisite research, but the benefits provided in developing partnerships based on mutual trust and goals makes it of great importance

Dialogues between French‐speaking mothers and daughters in two cultures
The main purpose of this study was to determine to what extent the pragmatic aspects of the speech of mothers addressing their 5‐ and 6‐year‐old children are dependent on cultural factors. Two variables are considered: the mother's cultural origin (France or Quebec) and the mother's child‐rearing style (coercive or inductive). Twenty 15‐min dialogues were videotaped. Quantitative measures (number of speaking turns, utterances, and speech acts) an…
