NGOs, HIV/Aids control and reproductive health in East Africa
Catalogues how Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are meeting, individually, the AIDS epidemic with governmental and non‐governmental organizations (NGOs). Uses data from the United Nations and World Bank. Gives background of NGOs in East Africa and their field work. Concludes that the social dimensions of each country are very restrictive in slightly differing ways, with the various religious beliefs also having an effect which is deleterious in nature.…

Social and Language Boundaries among Adolescents
A DOLESCENTS TODAY, AS EVER, HAVE TERMS by which they express approval (cool) or disapproval (bummer, it sucks); classify others (jocks, punks, or druggies); characterize events as enjoyable or boring, successes or failures; describe their comings or goings; and distinguish whether someone is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or both. Intermarriage in Hawaii, 1950-1983
This paper examines intermarrige in Hawaii 1) longitudinally from 1950 to 1983 2) for its relationship with heterogeneity and 3) for sex-specific measures of heterogeneity and group size. Using Hawaiian vital statistics data matched to census data the authors compared group size and outmarriage with age prior marital status and place of residence. The rate of outmarriage across age groups is constantly high across the period hovering at about 60%…
Social structure and peer terminology in a black adolescent gang
Studies of the social organization of adolescent groups may not have always taken into account sufficiently the dual reality of the groups in which much of the youths' activities occur. Peer terminology is useful in locating and describing the associational patterns and activities of the youth, but only if the range of possible terms is considerably broadened. It was found in a study of a Harlem street gang that such language may appear ambiguous…

The six-month period following the first use of words by Jessie L. was dominated by two one-word utterances, cat and mama. A near-total record of her use of these words, along with several minor lexical items, is the basis of a detailed analysis of her acquisition of phonetic and phonological capacities.
