  • Family Structure as a Social Determinant of Child Health

Sheila Barnhart, Keith M Kilty et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty•2020•Referencias: 3

Maternal marital status may contribute to health disparities among children; marriage often associates with better outcomes. Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, we tested separate structural equation models to compare direct and indirect relationships between maternal economic hardship, parenting stress, and adolescent self-rated health among 3,146 married and unmarried mothers. Although parenting stress did not associ…

  • Fifty Years Later

    Keith M Kilty•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty•2015

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESA) of 1965 was intended to ensure access to a quality education for low-income and minority children. President Lyndon B. Johnson, a teacher himself at the beginning of his career, saw education as a critical avenue out of poverty. The Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965 was intended to do the same for college and university education. Unfortunately, fifty years later the foundation of these important …

  • Fifty Years Later

    Keith M Kilty•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty•2014•Citada por: 2

This year is the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon Baines Johnson’s declaration of war on poverty in his 1964 State of the Union address. Critics argue that the War on Poverty was a failure and a colossal waste of money. Yet the facts show just the opposite. In five years, the War on Poverty reduced the U.S. poverty rate from 19.0% to 12.1%, with the rate falling to a record low of 11.1% in 1973. Now the poverty rate stands at 15.0%. When this…

Keith M Kilty, Maria Videl De Haymes•ARTICLE•Ethnic studies review•2004•Citada por: 2

The first national census was conducted in 1790, and has been repeated at ten year intervals ever since. While census taking has been consistent, the way individuals have been counted and categorized on the basis of race and ethnicity has varied over time. This paper examines how the official census definition of Latinos has changed over the twenty-two census periods. The modifications of the official definition of this group are discussed in rel…

Public debate by policymakers prior to the passage of the PRWORA reflected a common set of attitudes and beliefs of those in power about public assistance and the poor. The power of their language to shape and inform policy is significant in our society. Those who hold power use language to mold and rationalize public policies. From a critical theory perspective, examination of the use of language by those in power to set norms, disempower, and m…

  • Gender and Racial Inequities in Retirement Resources

    Thomas K Gregoire, Keith M Kilty et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2002

Two waves of a Social Security Beneficiary survey were analyzed to consider differences in the retirement resources of women and men based on marital status and race/ethnicity. Despite increased workforce participation the economic situation of single women, including white women, worsened over time. A bifurcation in retirement resources was found, with men relying more on private income sources and women depending more on Social Security. Curren…

    Keith M Kilty•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty•2002•Referencias: 4

Race is one of the most defining characteristics for American society, and it has figured prominently in immigration policy throughout U.S. history. The first law related to immigration was the Naturalization Act of 1790, which restricted naturalized citizenship to “whites.” During the nineteenth century, increasing immigration from Asian countries began, first with the Chinese and later with the Japanese, Asian Indians, and Filipinos. During per…

  • Social and Economic Inequality and Asian Americans in the United States

    Elizabeth A Segal, Keith M Kilty et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty•2002•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 3

Describing social and economic inequality within the Asian American community is difficult. Depending on how “Asian American” is defined, there are twenty to thirty cultures, countries of origin, and a wide range of identities and circumstances that influence economic and social well-being. It is almost presumptuous to attempt to categorize such a diverse collection of identities as one group. At the same time, Asians and Pacific Islanders have b…

Race has been a particularly troublesome concept in the United States. It is especially problematic as it is applied to Latinos. While several perspectives are presented to examine race, race relations, and racial dynamics regarding Latinos in the U.S., this essay primarily relies on Omi and Winant's racial formation theory as a means for understanding the position of Latinos in the racial hierarchy of the United States. The authors argue that th…

While population growth for the Latino population has surged since the middle of this century, people of Spanish origin have been part of the American fabric since the nation's earliest days. Since the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War in 1848 and ceded most of what is now the American Southwest to the United States, Hispanics in this country (whether born here or outside U.S. borders) have been affected in various…

  • Institutional Racism and Sentencing Disparities for Cocaine Possession

    Keith M Kilty, Alfred Joseph•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty•1999•Referencias: 1

With the advent of the Reagan-Bush years came the contemporary “war on drugs” and a mounting drug frenzy that has had a profound impact on the lives of black men in American society. Connections between race and drug use are nothing new. At one time or another, many racial and ethnic groups in this country have been victimized by being linked as a group to some type of illicit drug use. Most recently, such links can be seen in the 1986 and 1988 f…

Virginia Richardson, Virginia E Richardson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty•1997•Referencias: 3

A critical gerontology perspective is used to compare and contrast expected retirement resources just prior to retirement with actual resources received six months after retirement. A sample of 242 retirees (125 men and 117 women) from a variety of occupational backgrounds was used. Retirement resources were measured by analyzing six financial indicators of retirement resources used in previous research. Independent variables were organized into …

A longitudinal research design was used to examine the relationship between retirement and mental health among 222 retirees (114 men and 108 women) at three different time periods: (I) at preretirement; (2) six months; and (3) one year later. Gender differences in the expression of symptoms, especially psychological anxiety, drinking problems, and health, were found across all three time periods. Retirement resulted in increases in drinking probl…

The development of the human services professions has become intertwined with the use of scientific inquiry. To some extent, the use of science has provided a means of legitimating social work and related professions. At the same time, the political conservatism and contraction of resources in recent years have led to an emphasis on the monitoring of social interventions. As a result, a particular ideology about science and objectivity has emerge…

Conventional explanations of drinking behavior and alcoholism suffer from serious inadequacies, due in large part to their unquestioning acceptance of certain assumptions about the effects of alcohol on human behavior that are rooted in moral prescriptions. That is, most contemporary models of drinking behavior assume that the consumption of alcohol leads to the loss of inhibitions or self-control, ultimately leading to behaviors that are not pre…

  • On the Relationship between Affect and Cognition

    Open Access•Keith M Kilty•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

The relationship between affect and cognition was explored by means of an attitude instrument, the implicative meaning (IM) procedure. The instrument was developed as a measure of attitudinal cognition, but it bears considerable resemblance to other procedures that have been hypothesized to be indirect measures of attitudinal affect. Two samples of Ss ( Ns of 75 and 84) and 12 attitude objects were studied. The correlations between IM scores and …

  • The Impact of Gender on Productive and Social Activities

Keith M Kilty, Virginia Richardson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•1985

Increasing numbers of women are becoming members of the labor force. Yet it is not clear to what extent working for wages relieves women of their responsibility for traditional and non-paid activities, such as household work and child care. This study examines the impact of gender on the division of domestic labor among working women and men. This research focuses on three kinds of productive activities (paid work, household work, and child care)…
