Health‐related quality of life in head and neck cancer survivors
PURPOSE: Head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors often experience distress and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) impairment. Research suggests that rural cancer patients may have poorer outcomes than urban patients. This study examined whether HNC patient emotional and HRQOL outcomes differ in those living in a rural versus urban location at 6 and 12 months postdiagnosis. METHODS: A total of 261 HNC patients were included from a longitudinal st…

The interactive effects of patient control beliefs on adherence to fluid-intake restrictions in hemodialysis
This study examined the interactive role of perceived control and preference for control on adherence in a sample of patients with chronic kidney disease. As part of a randomized controlled trial assessing adherence to fluid-intake restrictions, 119 hemodialysis patients completed measures of these constructs; results indicated that patients with high perceived control and high preference for control demonstrated the most favorable adherence. Thi…
Health Locus of Control and Depression in Chronic Kidney Disease
Participants in the present study were 207 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who completed internal HLOC and depression measures at baseline and at an approximately 16-month follow-up period. Regression results indicated that after controlling for baseline level of depression, baseline internal HLOC was not a significant predictor of depression at follow-up. However, increases in internal HLOC over the 16-month follow-up were predictive …
Behavioral and Medical Treatment of Chronic Polydipsia in a Patient With Schizophrenia and Diabetes Insipidus
OBJECTIVE: This case report describes a novel outpatient behavioral treatment intervention for chronic polydipsia. The program was used in an effort to reduce excessive fluid intake in a woman with chronic paranoid-type schizophrenia who also had a diagnosis of diabetes insipidus. METHODS: The 12-session individual behavioral intervention incorporated self-monitoring, stimulus control, coping skills training, and reinforcement components. RESULTS…
Patient-by-Treatment Context Interaction in Chronic Disease
OBJECTIVE: Previous reviews have concluded that there is little or no evidence supporting a predictable association between patient characteristics and regimen adherence in chronic illness. The primary objective of this article is to propose an alternative conceptual framework for the interpretation and design of adherence research. METHODS: The author's research involving adherence among patients with end-stage renal disease is reviewed and used…
Social Environment and Longevity in Schizophrenia
OBJECTIVE: The role of social support as a predictor of long-term survival among patients with schizophrenia was examined. METHODS: Social histories were abstracted from the medical records of a cohort of 133 deceased schizophrenic patients admitted for inpatient treatment between 1934 and 1944. Two independent raters assessed the quantity and quality of support available in each patient's social environment. RESULTS: Cox regression analysis reve…
Perceived Control, Behavioral Self-Blame, and Depression in Mouth and Breast Cancer Patients
Cynical Hostility, Powerful others Control Expectancies, and Patient Adherence in Hemodialysis
OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the joint role of cynical hostility and powerful others health locus of control expectancies in predicting regimen adherence in a sample of center hemodialysis patients. METHOD: Forty-eight hemodialysis patients completed the Cook-Medley Hostility (Ho) Scale and the Powerful Others Health Locus of Control (PHLC) scale. Adherence to the fluid-restriction and phosphorus reduction components of the treatment reg…
Effect of Verbal Self-Disclosure on Natural Killer Cell Activity
One objective of the present research was to examine the immunological effects of self-disclosing personal information regarding a traumatic or stressful experience. A second objective was to examine the hypothesis that the effect of self-disclosure on immune function is moderated by individual differences in cynical hostility. Forty-three male college undergraduates, classified as high or low on the Cook-Medley Hostility scale were randomly assi…
Patient Adherence in Chronic Illness
Previous reviews have concluded that there is no evidence for a predictable association between person factors and regimen adherence in chronic illness. The brief current review of the literature reveals that past work has been limited by the lack of a common structural theory of personality and the failure to consider the interaction of person factors with disease and treatment context. Application of the five‐factor model of personality to adhe…
Cynical hostility and cardiovascular reactivity during self-disclosure
Recent research suggests that hostility might contribute to the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) and other illnesses. One potential mechanism linking hostility and health is exaggerated physiological reactivity to social stressors. Given that mistrust and suspiciousness are closely related to this trait, the self-disclosure of personal information regarding a stressful experience may elicit heightened reactivity in hostile persons. To …
