I Cannot Think of Something More Complimentary”
Individuals whose bodies are displayed in sexualized manners may experience self-objectification; however, it is also possible that engagement in sexualized activities may be understood through the lens of positive body image. Sex work is a multi-layered profession, workers experience a variety of interactions across a multitude of contexts, and their bodies play a key role in the perception of those experiences. In particular for the workers in …
Dieting among a community sample of adults with chronic pain
Chronic pain and dieting represent significant threats to public health. Larger individuals and individuals with chronic pain are often stigmatized for their conditions and subsequently internalize stigma, exacerbating their negative mental and physical health impacts. Given the multiplicative effects of pain, stigma, and excess weight, research should examine associations among chronic pain, dieting behaviors, and experiences of health-related s…

Wrinkles and Sagging Flesh
In American society, the sexually desirable woman is young and thin. Changes associated with aging such as wrinkled skin or weight gain often bring women further from societal ideals of attractiveness. As physical appearance is very much related to desirability, we explore sexual body image and the way that it changes as women age. Based on in-depth interviews with 95 women aged 20-68, we find women's sexuality and feelings of desirability are in…
Does this profile picture make me look fat? Facebook and body image in college students
Facebook, a highly visual and social medium, is widely used by college students and thus may be associated with psychological factors in their lives, including how they feel about their appearance. In the current study, we examined 3 Facebook measures— number of Facebook friends, amount of time spent on Facebook, and emotional investment in Facebook—and their links with body image. Emerging adult students (N 255; ages 18‐25; 54% female) at a nonr…
