HIV PrEP Coverage Among Black Adults
Background: Significant racial disparities exist in HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) coverage in the United States (U.S), with Black individuals experiencing seven times higher new HIV infection rates compared to their White counterparts. Despite being the highest priority population at risk for HIV, Black adults have the lowest PrEP coverage, impacting the overall progress toward meeting the ending the HIV epidemic (EHE) goals in the U.S. Met…
Psychological resilience is an independent correlate of health-related quality of life in middle-aged and older adults with HIV in the Deep South
Older people living with HIV (PLWH) are at risk for poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Psychological resilience may protect HRQoL in this population. The sample included 174 predominately African American PLWH (age 40-73). Results indicated associations between resilience, socioeconomic status, cognitive performance, instrumental activities of daily living, personality, and depressive symptoms. HIV factors (e.g. viral load, duration o…
Feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary impact of telemedicine-administered cognitive behavioral therapy for adherence and depression among African American women living with HIV in the rural Sout…
Women living with HIV are disproportionally affected by depression and mental healthcare access. A pilot feasibility trial using videoconferencing compared cognitive behavioral therapy for antiretroviral therapy adherence and depression ( N = 11) to supportive psychotherapy ( N = 11). Participants completed 10-12 weekly therapy sessions and 6-month follow-up. Retention at 6 months was 95 percent. Depression symptoms significantly decreased in bot…
HIV-related stigma, depression, and social support are associated with health-related quality of life among patients newly entering HIV care
Entering HIV care is a vulnerable time for newly diagnosed individuals often exacerbating psychosocial difficulties, which may contribute to poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL) ultimately influencing health behaviors including ART adherence, the driver of viral load suppression. Understanding HRQOL in people newly entering HIV care is critical and has the potential to guide practice and research. This exploratory cross-sectional study exa…
