METHODS AND MEASURES: Nineteen individuals with axSpA who attended a two-week residential rehabilitation programme, and nine HCPs were recruited. Patient focus groups and HCP i…
A classification system for teachers' motivational behaviors recommended in self-determination theory interventions
Teachers' behavior is a key factor that influences students' motivation. Many theoretical models have tried to explain this influence, with one of the most thoroughly researched being self-determination theory (SDT). We used a Delphi method to create a classification of teacher behaviors consistent with SDT. This is useful because SDT-based interventions have been widely used to improve educational outcomes. However, these interventions contain m…

The objectives of this article were (1) to summarize the findings from the Global Matrix 4.0 Report Cards, (2) to compare indicators across countries, and (3) to explore trends related to t…
Physical education in a post-Covid world
How does the education sector recover following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic? Much enthusiasm exists to imagine how teaching practices can be enriched within the so-called ‘new normal.’ The physical and mental health benefits associated with school physical education have attracted considerable attention during the pandemic. Capitalizing on the raised awareness of the many positive contributions of school physical education, a p…
A classification of motivation and behavior change techniques used in self-determination theory-based interventions in health contexts.
While evidence suggests that interventions based on self-determination theory have efficacy in \nmotivating adoption and maintenance of health-related behaviors, and in promoting adaptive \npsychological outcomes, the motivational techniques that comprise the content of these \ninterventions have not been comprehensively identified or described. The aim of the present \nstudy was to develop a classification system of the techniques that comprise …

Compositional data analysis for physical activity, sedentary time and sleep research
The health effects of daily activity behaviours (physical activity, sedentary time and sleep) are widely studied. While previous research has largely examined activity behaviours in isolation, recent studies have adjusted for multiple behaviours. However, the inclusion of all activity behaviours in traditional multivariate analyses has not been possible due to the perfect multicollinearity of 24-h time budget data. The ensuing lack of adjustment …
Global Matrix 3.0 Physical Activity Report Card Grades for Children and Youth
Background : Accumulating sufficient moderate to vigorous physical activity is recognized as a key determinant of physical, physiological, developmental, mental, cognitive, and social health among children and youth (aged 5–17 y). The Global Matrix 3.0 of Report Card grades on physical activity was developed to achieve a better understanding of the global variation in child and youth physical activity and associated supports. Methods : Work group…
Adiposity and the isotemporal substitution of physical activity, sedentary time and sleep among school-aged children
The compositional isotemporal model caters for the constrained and therefore relative nature of activity behaviour data and enables all daily behaviours to be included in a single statistical model. The traditional model treats data as real variables, thus the constrained nature of time is not accounted for, nor reflected in the findings. Findings from compositional isotemporal substitution support the importance of MVPA to children's health, and…
The home electronic media environment and parental safety concerns
Our results suggest that specific groups of children are less likely to spend their free time outside, and it would seem that only prolonged recreational computer use has a negative association with children's outdoor time after school. Further research is needed to explore potential underlying mechanisms, and parental safety concerns in more detail
Human development index, children’s health-related quality of life and movement behaviors
Sleep patterns and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption among children from around the world
Objective To examine the relationships between objectively measured sleep patterns (sleep duration, sleep efficiency and bedtime) and sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption (regular soft drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks and fruit juice) among children from all inhabited continents of the world. Design Multinational, cross-sectional study. Setting The International Study of Childhood Obesity, Lifestyle and the Environment (ISCOLE). Subject…
Socioeconomic status and dietary patterns in children from around the world
This study provides evidence of diet-SES gradients across all levels of human development and that lower within-country SES is strongly related to unhealthy dietary patterns. Consistency in within-country diet-SES gradients suggest that interventions and public health strategies aimed at improving dietary patterns among children may be similarly employed globally. However, future studies should seek to replicate these findings in more representat…
Associations of neighborhood social environment attributes and physical activity among 9–11 year old children from 12 countries
Proportion of children meeting recommendations for 24-hour movement guidelines and associations with adiposity in a 12-country study
BACKGROUND: The Canadian 24-h movement guidelines were developed with the hope of improving health and future health outcomes in children and youth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate adherence to the 3 recommendations most strongly associated with health outcomes in new 24-h movement guidelines and their relationship with adiposity (obesity and body mass index z-score) across countries participating in the International Study of Childhood…
Life transitions and relevance of healthy living in late adolescence

A test of self-determination theory in school physical education
Background. Contemporary research conducted in the context of school physical education (PE) has increasingly embraced various tenets of self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985, 1991). Despite this increase in research attention, some postulates of the framework remain unexplored (e.g. impact of a need-supportive climate). As such, the present study sought to provide a more comprehensive test of self-determination theory. The present work al…

Self-handicapping in school physical education
Background. Self-handicapping is an attribution-related process whereby individuals create performance impediments/excuses to protect self-worth in socially evaluative environments. Thus, the prevailing motivational climate would appear to be an important factor when attempting to understand the situational self-handicapping process within school physical education.Aims. Drawing from achievement goal theory, the study examined the effect of exper…
Relationship among achievement goal orientations and multidimensional situational motivation in physical education
Background. Contemporary research suggests that task and ego achievement goal orientations affect students' intrinsic motivation in physical education. This research has assessed intrinsic motivation as a unidimensional contruct, however, which is inconsistent with the more contemporary postulates of self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985, 1991) which states that intrinsic motivation is only one type of motivation. To date, research has not…
A model of contextual motivation in physical education
Assessing the motivational responses of 328 secondary school students, this study examined a model of student motivation in physical education that incorporated constructs from achievement goal and self-determination theories. The focus was on the prediction of students' intention to partake in physical activity outside of physical education. Structural equation modeling analysis supported a model in which an autonomy-supportive climate, and to a…
