Adaptation strategies and future concerns for ecological restoration of Lake Urmia Basin, Iran
The desiccation of Lake Urmia, Iran, represents a critical environmental crisis driven by water scarcity. In 2010, the "Integrated Management Plan for Lake Urmia Basin" was implemented to restore the lake, primarily by improving agricultural irrigation efficiency from 35% to 60% to reduce water withdrawals by 40%. This study evaluates the hydrological outcomes of this restoration plan between 2010 and 2022, specifically investigating the interpla…
Beyond profit
Agricultural insurance is promoted as a drought-risk tool, yet its net long-term socio-hydrological impacts and interactions with other adaptations remain disputed. We expand the Geographical, Environmental and Behavioural model (GEB), a fully distributed hydrological model coupled with an agent-based model (ABM), a process-based crop model and a dynamic farmer adaptation behavior model. We add two adaptation options (wells, crop switching) and t…
The impact of natural hazards on migration in the United States and the effect of spatial dependence
In this paper, we analyze the effect of natural hazards on migration in the United States (US) and the importance of spatial dependence in such assessments. We use two measures of migration: migration rates and flows. The model for migration flows is estimated using the gravity model, whereas out- and in-migration rates are analyzed using the spatial Durbin model. Our results indicate there is a major and significant impact of economic damage cau…
Identifying vulnerability factors associated with heatwave mortality
In recent decades, Europe has experienced severe heatwaves with significant mortality impacts. While hazard and exposure are key factors, vulnerability drivers play a crucial role in shaping these outcomes. However, few studies have examined these drivers at a continental scale. This study presents the first dynamic heat vulnerability assessment for Europe, incorporating spatial and temporal dimensions through ordinary least squares regression. S…
Uncovering unprecedented storm surges in European and Mediterranean coastlines
Recent research has considerably advanced our ability to model extreme surges. Yet, simulating unprecedented events, i.e. events which are more extreme than observed in historical datasets, remains challenging. To some extent, anticipating such events is possible by accounting for the full range of climate variability. Using a 525-year synthetic dataset from a seasonal reforecast archive, this study uncovers potential unprecedented storm surge ev…
Challenges and opportunities in climate risk assessment
As climate change impacts intensify worldwide, assessing climate risks comprehensively is essential for guiding effective disaster risk management and adaptation strategies. This systematic literature review examines the latest developments in Climate Risk Assessment (CRA), focusing on how climate risks are framed and assessed. It explores advancements, ongoing challenges, and emerging opportunities to guide future generations of CRAs. Key findin…
Challenges in the attribution of river flood events
Advances in the field of extreme event attribution allow to estimate how anthropogenic global warming affects the odds of individual climate disasters, such as river floods. Extreme event attribution typically uses precipitation as proxy for flooding. However, hydrological processes and antecedent conditions make the relation between precipitation and floods highly nonlinear. In addition, hydrology acknowledges that changes in floods can be stron…
Science for Loss and Damage. Findings and Propositions
The debate on “Loss and Damage” (L&D) has gained traction over the last few years. Supported by growing scientific evidence of anthropogenic climate change amplifying frequency, intensity and duration of climate-related hazards as well as observed increases in climate-related impacts and risks in many regions, the “Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage” was established in 2013 and further supported through the Paris Agreement in 2015…
Changing mechanism of global water scarcity events

Managing Change toward Adaptive Water Management through Social Learning

Testing Popular Visualization Techniques for Representing Model Uncertainty
Many land allocation issues, such as land-use planning, require input from extensive spatial databases and involve complex decision-making. Spatial decision support systems (SDSS) are designed to make these issues more transparent and to support the design and evaluation of land allocation alternatives. In this paper we analyze techniques for visualizing uncertainty of an urban growth model called SLEUTH, which is designed to aid decision-makers …
