The economics of underutilized crops in Europe
Underutilized crops (UCs) represent a considerable number of crop varieties. Acknowledged as a source of biodiversity and food security in the global south, they could also contribute to crop diversity in Europe. This paper aims to review the scientific literature on the economic aspects of UCs at farm, value chain, and community levels in Europe. We find 55 papers. The literature gives only partial evidence on these economic aspects scattered ac…
Farmers’ Voices in European Protests
Analyzed 2232 farmers’ protest reasons across four European countries. • Used open-ended survey data to capture top-of-mind concerns from farmers. • Country-specific protest reasons: bureaucracy, financial, policy, and diverse motivations. • Some misalignment between farmers’ concerns and EU policy priorities. The 2024 farmers’ protests across Europe signaled widespread dissatisfaction in the agricultural sector. While low farm incomes and restri…
Information practices for improved sustainability assurance in Vietnamese shrimp aquaculture
This paper explores the performance and embeddedness of information practices performed by smallholder farmers in Vietnamese shrimp aquaculture in response to private sustainability interventions. Using a social practice intervention framework, we analyse how existing information practices embedded in the wider social lives of farmers are affected by the adoption of both analogue and digital reporting methodologies prescribed by the Aquaculture S…
Relating risk preferences and risk perceptions over different agricultural risk domains
Households in developing countries are exposed to various shocks and risks, which leaves them vulnerable as they typically have limited resources to cope with them. Even though a large body of development literature has focused on the role of risk in rural livelihoods, the focus is often on single sources of risk and taking a unidimensional view on risk preference. This paper explores the diversity in risk perception and risk preferences of Ethio…
From risk behavior to perceived farm resilience
Slijper, T., Y. De Mey, P. Poortvliet, and M. Meuwissen. 2020. From risk behavior to perceived farm resilience: a Dutch case study. Ecology and Society 25(4):10. https://doi.org/10.5751/ES-11893-250410
A framework to assess the resilience of farming systems
Agricultural systems in Europe face accumulating economic, ecological and societal challenges, raising concerns about their resilience to shocks and stresses. These resilience issues need to be addressed with a focus on the regional context in which farming systems operate because farms, farmers' organizations, service suppliers and supply chain actors are embedded in local environments and functions of agriculture . We define resilience of a far…
Inclusive environmental performance through ‘beyond-farm’ aquaculture governance
This paper examines the potential for improved environmental performance of smallholder aquaculture production through ‘beyond-farm’ governance. Smallholder aquaculture farmers face a range of systemic environmental risks related to disease and water quality that extend beyond the boundary of their farms. Yet most governance arrangements aimed at mitigating risks, such as certification, finance and insurance, are focused on the farm-level rather …
Inclusiveness of contract farming along the vertical coordination continuum
The Vietnamese government is currently attempting to upgrade rice value chains in the Mekong River Delta by encouraging (i) vertical coordination between exporters and farmers through contract farming, and (ii) horizontal coordination among farmers through the “small farmers, large field” program. Previous studies on the determinants of contract farming participation assume that firms offer only a single contract type, whereas in reality, farmers…
