  • A synthesis of health benefits of natural sounds and their distribution in national parks

    Open Access•Rachel T Buxton, Amber L Pearson et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2021

Significance This study examines evidence of the health benefits of natural soundscapes and quantifies the prevalence of restorative acoustic environments in national parks across the United States. The results affirm that natural sounds improve health, increase positive affect, and lower stress and annoyance. Also, analyses reveal many national park sites with a high abundance of natural sound and low anthropogenic sound. Raising awareness of na…

  • Ecosystem services enhanced through soundscape management link people and wildlife

    Open Access•Mitchell J Levenhagen, Zachary D Miller et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2021

Burgeoning urbanization, development and human activities have led to reduced opportunities for nature experience in quiet acoustic environments. Increasing noise affects both humans and wildlife alike. We experimentally altered human‐caused sound levels in a paired study using informational signs that encouraged quiet behaviours in week‐on, week‐off blocks on the trail system of Muir Woods National Monument, California, USA to test if the sounds…

  • Does experimentally quieting traffic noise benefit people and birds

    Open Access•Mitchell J Levenhagen, Zachary D Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2021

    Levenhagen, M. J., Z. D. Miller, A. R. Petrelli, L. A. Ferguson, Y.-H. Shr, B. Taff, K. M. Fristrup, C. J. W. McClure, S. Burson, M. Giamellaro, P. Newman, C. D. Francis, and J. R. Barber. 2021. Does experimentally quieting traffic noise benefit people and birds? Ecology and Society 26(2):32. https://doi.org/10.5751/ES-12277-260232

  • Photograph Presentation Order and Range Effects in Visual-Based Outdoor Recreation Research

    Adam Gibson, Adam W Gibson et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2014•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 34

Visual based research methods, referring to the use of visual images to represent recreation resource conditions, are commonly used in outdoor recreation research to investigate appropriate levels of visitor use. Visual methods were developed to allow for the simulation of recreation resource conditions that would be difficult to describe using narrative methods. The research contained in this dissertation builds on previous research related to v…

  • The Evolution of the Advanced Hominid Brain [and Comments and Reply]

    Bennett Blumenberg, Kurt M Fristrup et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1983•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 29

A stochastic, hierarchical model for the evolution of the advanced hominid brain is developed. The fossil and geological data date the event to 1.6-1.8 million years ago. Palaeoclimatological evidence does not suggest that it coincided with significant ecological change. The cognitive capacities of "small" hominoid brains are reviewed in the context of pongid technology and carnivory and the evidence for hominid stone tool technology prior to the…
