A glimpse into daily life in an Ottoman harbour
The cesspit evidences the everyday life of its users in 17th-19th centuries. • A broad diet included bread, vegetables, fruits, nuts, spices, meat, fish and honey. • The harbour of Ainos contributed to expansion of new foods from the New World. • The inhabitants of the house were infected by helminths and protozoa. The daily life of non-elite people from the past is usually hard to evaluate, since historical sources largely concentrate on the upp…

Paleoecological data complete historical and archaeological archives
This study reconstructs the paleoecological settings of Chilia/Licostomo, the most important Genoese colony in the Danube delta. Our paleoenvironmental data (i.e., sedimentology, pollen, charcoal, radiocarbon ages) corroborate historical and archaeological information over the last seven centuries to document the habitation at Chilia and its military and socioeconomic activity during ca. 14th–19th centuries A.D. Palynological data show the contin…

Late-Holocene landscape evolution and human presence in the northern Danube delta (Chilia distributary lobes)
This paper documents the Late-Holocene environmental changes and human presence in the northern Danube delta using a multidisciplinary approach that combines geoscientific data with archaeological findings, historical texts, and maps. It follows the formation and progression of the Chilia distributary and the reconfiguration of socioeconomic activities. Sedimentary facies identified on five new cores by changes in texture properties, magnetic sus…
Mid- to late-Holocene sea-level evolution of the northeastern Aegean sea
We combined biostratigraphical analyses, archaeological surveys, and Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) models to provide new insights into the relative sea-level evolution in the northeastern Aegean Sea (eastern Mediterranean). In this area, characterized by a very complex tectonic pattern, we produced a new typology of sea-level index point, based on the foraminiferal associations found in transgressive marine facies. Our results agree with the…

Mythic Geography, Barbarian Identities
The presence of Pygmies in Thrace is neither a misunderstanding nor a fantasy of Pliny the Elder: this reference, confirmed by Stephanus of Byzantium, can be explained through the history of the Pygmies, mythic people mentioned in the Iliad and integrated in the Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance descriptions of the inhabited world. The modern historian can reveal the reasons that made the Greeks and Romans locate these littl…

Deux scarabées d’Orgamè/Argamum
Two scarabs from Orgame/ Argamum. The two faience scarabs discovered at Orgame in a house dated, on the basis of a stamped amphora fragment and other fine wares, to the end of the IVth century BC are of the "Naucratite type" (Gorton 1996, type XXVIII). For the ICEM 46773, a mould representing the Scarabaeus Sacer in a naturalistic way has been used ; the Tilapia Nilotica, with a Nymphaea Caerulea in its mouth, cast on the underside, is very commo…
Following on from a critical ‘inventory’ of ancient evidence and modern interpretations regarding the presence of Syrians, Assyrians or Leukosyrians in the North-East of Asia Minor, I propose a geographical explanation for this strange homonymy in ancient ethnography: the presence of Syrians in Pontic and Eastern Mediterranean regions could be regarded, in Greek and Roman times, as the effect of a narrowed perception of the oekoumene. This could …
Common Sense Geography and Ancient Geographical Texts
This paper places the concept of ‘common sense geography’ as developed by the members of Topoi research group C-5 within the context of ancient geographical literature. For the first time, a consistent model of arranging and classifying Greek and Roman geographical texts from a historical perspective is presented
