This manuscript looks at factors that affect the early adolescent's progress toward abstract thinking. It is organized around theoretical ideas, research data, and strategies for learning abstract thinking. Dimensions of Early Adolescent Social Perceptions and Preferences
This study was undertaken to assess the psychosocial characteristics of early adolescents in two K-6 and a 6-8 school. All students in grade 6 of two feeder schools and grades 6 and 7 of a middle school (the two transition years) [N=568] from a Los Angeles suburb were studied. The Amount of Sex Information Learning Obtained During Early Adolescence
This study reports the findings of a survey on sources of sex information among 1152 students. They were asked to identify their initial sources of information on twelve sexual concepts. In addition, they indicated the age when they first learned these concepts and wrote a definition for each of the twelve terms. Results indicate that 99 percent of initial sex infor-mation is learned in the early adolescent years or earlier. Females tended to lea…
Educating the Preadolescent about Sex
The author attempts to provide a rationale for providing some systematic sex information to youth between nine and twelve years of age. Incidences of early heterosexual play among this age group are reported through reviewing several research studies investigating this phenomena.
