  • Reinventing School Finance

Lawrence O Picus, Allan Odden et al.•ARTICLE•Peabody Journal of Education•2011•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

States and school districts are facing unprecedented financial pressure due to the continued poor performance of the United States's economy. Dramatic shortfalls in funding due to reduced tax collections were held off for 2 years thanks to federal stimulus funds, but with these revenues already consumed and little likelihood of more in the near future, school districts are faced with some of the largest funding shortfalls they have ever experienc…

  • Lessons Learned About Standards-Based Teacher Evaluation Systems

    Allan Odden•ARTICLE•Peabody Journal of Education•2004•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 7

In this article, I draw several lessons learned about how to assess student, classroom, and teacher effects, with a specific focus on performance-based teacher evaluations. One lesson is that hierarchical linear modeling techniques are helpful in sorting out the magnitude of impacts at these three different levels of the education system. The other major lessons are reflected in the conclusion that research findings suggest that educators have le…

  • Assessing Teacher, Classroom, and School Effects, Including Fiscal Effects

Allan Odden, Geoffrey D Borman et al.•ARTICLE•Peabody Journal of Education•2004•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 59

In this article, we argue that too much previous research has tended to assess the effects of student, classroom, and school variables in isolation from other variables and has often used statistical techniques that ignored the nested nature of the 3 classes of factors. We then argue that a more educationally oriented framework should be used to assess the effects of various student, classroom/teacher, and school variables on student learning, pa…

  • Improving Educational Productivity and School Finance

    Open Access•Allan Odden, William H Clune et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•1995•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 25

The education productivity problem historically has been rising resources with flat or only slowly rising student achievement. In the period 1960-1990, infla-tion-adjusted revenues per pupil rose by slightly more than 200 % (National Center for Education Statistics, 1994). However, despite a number of positive performance indi-cators, student achievement in core subject areas during the same period rose only modestly (Mullis et al., 1994; Odden, …

  • Decentralized management and school finance

    Allan Odden•ARTICLE•Theory Into Practice•1994•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 3

per pupil in U.S. schools have been rising at substantially high rates (National Center for Education Statistics, 1992). Yet while education spending goes up, average student achievement does not. This article addresses this concern by making connections among school reform, school organization, and school finance. A premise of the article is that, in the future, achievement needs to rise much faster than resources if the nation is to attain the …

  • State Strategies to Support Local School Improvement

    Open Access•Beverly Anderson, Beverly L Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Knowledge•1987•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 4

In recent years, state departments of education have undertaken strategies to support local school improvement. Some emphasize school wide improvement while others focus specifically on instructional improvement. This study, based on case study methodology, sought to determine what factors were most important in the process of actually putting in place an improvement effort. The study indicated that the implementation within the school could be b…
