Micro-ecologies and economic strategies in Antiquity
In this paper, we discuss possible waterscape exploitation of Razelm-Golovița lagoon system in Antiquity using a new paleo-environmental reconstruction and a revision of relative and absolute chronologies of the evolution of the southern Danube Delta in relation to the historical development of the Greek settlements of Orgame, Caraburun-Acic Suat and Istros. The sites are located in a highly dynamic fluvio-lagoonal environment with diverse physic…

The Submerged Pre‐Columbian Site of Fond Banane (Martinique, French West Indies)
Late Holocene coastal dynamics in the Lesser Antilles remain poorly documented at the site scale, obscuring links between shoreline change and pre‐Columbian settlements. We integrate hyperbaric coring, RTK‐DGNSS mapping, granulometry, FTIR, portable‐XRF, biosedimentological analysis, and AMS 14 C dates to reconstruct the palaeoshoreline history of the submerged pre‐Columbian site of Fond Banane, Martinique. Sedimentary archives record a stable ve…
Coastal occupation and relative sea-level changes during Martinique’s Early Ceramic Period
While the uniformity of settlement dynamics at Martinique’s Early Ceramic sites is beyond dispute, it must be acknowledged that today’s North Atlantic coastlines of the island, characterized by subvertical cliffs and pebble beaches, are poorly suited for canoe landing and other coastal activities. Yet, from both cultural and economic perspectives, these inherently maritime populations remain intrinsically connected to the coast and the sea. Thus,…

Geoarchaeological investigations of the river harbours of Noviodunum – The headquarters of the Roman Imperial fleet (Lower Danube, Romania)
Late Holocene relative sea‐level fluctuations and crustal mobility at Bataneh (Najirum) archaeological site, Persian Gulf, Iran
The impacts of relative sea‐level (RSL) variations and crust mobility on the development of ancient harbours in the northern Persian Gulf are poorly understood. Many unanswered questions remain with regard to the main reasons for a shift in the location of the most important ancient harbours in the northern part of the Persian Gulf coastal since 50 BC. Furthermore, some important early Islamic harbours, such as Siraf, have ancient city quarters t…
Millennial variability of rates of sea-level rise in the ancient harbour of Naples (Italy, western Mediterranean Sea)
We reconstructed the late Holocene relative sea-level (RSL) evolution of the ancient harbour of Naples, one of the largest coastal conurbations in the Mediterranean. We carried out multiproxy investigations, coupling archaeological evidence with biological indicators. Our data robustly constrain 2000 yr of non-monotonic changes in sea level, chiefly controlled by the complex volcano-tectonic processes that characterize the area. Between ~200 BC a…

Halmyris
In Northern Dobrogea, north of the Dunavăţ promontory, the Roman fortress of Halmyris was founded in the late 1st century AD on a Getic settlement dating to the middle of the 1st millennium BC, probably associated with a Greek emporium of the Classical and Hellenistic periods. At the time of the foundation of Halmyris, the Danube delta had already prograded several kilometres to the east leading to the progressive retreat of the sea and the forma…
Development and decline of the ancient harbor of Neapolis
Archaeological excavations, undertaken since 2004 for the construction of the new Naples subway, have unearthed the harbor basin of the Greco–Roman town of Parthenope–Neapolis, furnishing scientists with the opportunity to recover abundant archaeological remains and a thick succession of diverse infill sediments. The latter underwent sedimentological, paleontological, and volcanological analyses. Compositional data analysis, applied to all three …
Geoarchaeological investigations at Akko, Israel
Since the first archaeological excavations undertaken in the 1970s/1980s, Tel Akko is known to have been an important trade city from the early 2nd millennium B.C. onwards. Even if the site has been intensively excavated, no paleoenvironmental studies looking to understand coastal changes near the tell since the Bronze Age had been undertaken until recently. Our research is based on the study of sediment cores drilled at the foot of the tell and …
The New Swedish Cyprus Expedition. Excavations at Hala Sultan Tekke (The Söderberg Expedition)
In the seventh season at the Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke excavations continued in City Quarter 1 (CQ1) where georadar indicated stone structures to the south of the area excavated in 2010–2012. Massive domestic structures, which belong to three phases of occupation (Strata 1–3), were exposed. Both the most recent Stratum 1, and Stratum 2 were destroyed in a conflagration. The three phases are preliminarily dated to the 13th and 12th cent…

Relative Sea‐Level Changes During Roman Times in the Northwest Mediterranean
Fish tanks become fashionable throughout the Mediterranean area between the 1st century B.C. and the 1st century A.D. Because of this narrow chronological window, and their link to former sea level, they constitute precious archives to investigate relative sea level (RSL) since the Roman period, especially when combined with fossilized marine benthos found attached to the fish tank walls. Here, we present new results from an integrated analysis o…

Late H olocene Tectonic Uplift and the Silting Up of L echaion, the Western Harbor of Ancient C orinth, G reece
L echaion's ancient harbor is now a coastal swamp filled with sediments. Two natural factors explain the harbor's abandonment: (1) tectonic uplift during historical times and (2) the location of the harbor basin in a serpentine depression protected from the sea. Although it undoubtedly functioned as a very efficient sediment trap, only modest sedimentation rates (<1 mm/yr) have been measured in the basin. This paradox suggests that the basin was …

Stratigraphy of late-Holocene deposits of the ancient harbour of Marseilles, southern France
The late-Holocene stratigraphy of Marseilles harbour is presented together with archaeological evidence and radiocarbon data. An anthropogenic oyster midden, dated between c. 4260 and 3400 14 C yr BP is followed by a period of siltation that ended the accretionary growth of an algal (marl) deposit. This event was caused by early human settlement. Subsequently the coastline was subject to progradation. It is argued here that the development of the…

Geoarchaeological evidence for dredging in Tyre's ancient harbour, Levant
Chrono-stratigraphic data from Tyre's ancient northern harbour delineate extensive dredging practices during the Greco-Roman and Byzantine periods. Radiocarbon dates from four cores consistently cluster between ca. 500 B.C. and 1000 A.D. and indicate rapid rates of sedimentation in the basin, namely ∼10 mm/yr during the Greco-Roman and Byzantine periods, compared to 0.5–1 mm/yr for the period 6000–4000 B.C. Absence of strata between 4000 B.C. and…
